Does anybody think the prism price should be reduced to $400 to keep up with the new color handhelds or to try and attract possible color pda buyers?

I personally think it should be between $350-$375 with the IIIc down to $299. Not going to happen, but that's where I'd price it were I running things.

Of course!

The price should be lowered so I can get one...

The Prism has a lot of advantages over the IIIc -- faster, Springboard, higher color depth, USB for home users. I don't think the price would go lower than $399 (current VE) for a while.

Yeah, but the m505 has a lot going for it over the prism: blinking alarm, vibrating alarm, better(?) battery technology, smaller form factor, metal casing, etc. which should keep the two from costing the same. So considering what it has over the IIIc and what the m505 has over it, I think the prism should be priced between the two ($350-$375).

Thumbs down

A poll like this is about as useful as one that asks "do you want a raise?"

Hehe, well there are obviously some people that feel they are making plenty of money at the moment.

The Prism has a couple of advantages too, like a semi-better screen and currently-available peripherals.

I agree that $375 (or less ) is a good price for the Prism, but I don't know that they would lower the price below that of the Edge... at least until something new comes out.

I thought the Prism was kind of expensive even when it first came out. I don't regret buying it, it's served me well the last six months, but I did think long and hard about the price. I decided I *had* to have color and a backup module, and the Prism was the only option. Now give the option of an M505 at the same price, there's no question which I'd buy, and I can't imagine Handspring will sell many more Prisms at the current price.

There's a subtle difference. The subtext of the question is: Is it in Handspring's interest to lower the price? Or put differently, do we know that higher-volume sales would make up for reduced margins? Handspring seems to think not. It's taken eighteen months for the company to reduce the VDX's price, and only by 20%. Fortunately for Handspring, all other handhelds except the IIIc and the Diamond Mako have been equally slow in price reductions.

For my purposes -- I need the Springboard slot -- I'd go for the Prism, but the vast majority of consumers are going to opt for the m505 unless Handspring makes a more competitive offer than a $30 rebate off of selected modules. The only way I can see HS aceing out Palm is through a $50 price cut for the Prism and the Edge, and the introduction of a color Edge in the $450-499 range.

I agree with Gameboy70 - only a color Edge is going to be competitive with the m505. (And there HAS to be a color Edge in the works.)

Currently, I think the screen issue is a tossup - my Prism is better indoors than a 505, but much worse outdoors. But you can give me the 505 form factor any day over my Prism brick. Plus, at least some 505 dealers are offering a free 16mb SD memory card. I have no experience here, but I hear that the file transfer process on the 505 is invisible to the user, and that it is cumbersome on most Visor memory modules. Like most users, I don't use any modules, although at a good price/utility level (and "free and easy" is a pretty good level!) I would buy a memory module - those pesky huge Avantgo files!

I recently set a price alert on CNet for Prism below $400. About three weeks ago, I was notified that Mobile Planet was selling them for 399.00 and I ordered one. Within a couple of days, the Mobile Planet price was up to 449.00. However, I got another notification about a week ago and three vendors were selling for them $399. My point is, maybe the price is coming down, just unofficially.
