Question

Handspring finally has that hard metallic case for the Edge up on their website for purchase. Has anyone seen one of these yet? My brand new Edge's flip cover was accidentally scratched, and I'm not sure whether I want to replace it or buy the hard case.

How much thickness does it add?
Is it the same anodized metal as the Edge?
Does it hold fingerprints?
Will it fit in a back pocket like the Edge itself?
Can you really sync and beam with it in place?

Thanks

Well, I can't answer yet, since mine hasn't arrived, but one or two other questions I'd add in case anyone answers before I do are...
Does the case prohibit having the springboard sled installed?
Do any of the Edge cases facilitate the springboard sled being installed?

I don't plan on having mine on all the time, but it'd be nice to not have to sacrifice screen protection for expansion.

I'm just answering based on what I see. I don't own one, but probably will.

thickness: I'm expecting to be minimal, but slightly noticeable.

metal: advertised as anodized aluminum. I don't see how Handspring would profit by lying.

fingerprints: no more than the edge itself, as they are both anodized aluminum

pocket: goes along with size. I'd expect it would fit as nicely as it does with the flip cover.

sync/beam: again I don't see how Handspring would benefit from lies, so yes.

sled: looks like it slides over the top (makes sense if it is still able to sync and beam), so no. I'm sure Handspring had to decide between syncing and beaming or the sled.

Like I said, I don't own one nor seen one in person, so these are guesses based on advertising and the photos on Handspring's website.

Unhappy

OK, my case and Edge arrived today...

It doesn't add much (~2mm to be specific as possible).

Yep, same thing on the outside. The external part of the hinge and the inside of the case are a fairly durable-looking plastic.

Not so far. If your Edge doesn't, this shouldn't.

I carry mine in my front pocket, but I don't see why not if you already carry yours there.

This is the most disappointing part...beam yes, sync no. There's a depression about the size of the beam window on the plastic of the hinge, so beaming should be fine. However, you cannot place it into the cradle as is. You have to lift the case slightly. You've noticed how the pics on the Handspring website show it slightly detached? There's a reason for that. That's pretty much exactly how much it sticks up to get it into the cradle. Most disappointing.

A killer idea for me would be to remove that extra bit of length in the back and to integrate a springboard adapter into the case (also in anodized aluminum). I can't see why no one thought of this.

Pretty close to hitting the nail on the head. Never would've guessed about the sync problems, though. So when Handspring says, "Designed to allow synchronization...without removing the case," they really mean you don't have to entirely remove the case. Sounds like Microsoft's advertising people have been giving lessons.

Thumbs up I love the case!

I just got mine yesterday and it is VERY sexy. Feels solid, like it's part of the Edge itself. The Hotsync issue is no big deal as it's easy to pop the case down an inch before dropping it in the cradle. Thumbs up!!!

Well, I wouldn't be nearly as disappointed were it not for the fact that Handspring's site suggests that this shouldn't be necessary. Now, technically they're correct in that one doesn't have to _remove_ the case, but that's a pretty weak excuse given the likely connotation that's suggested.

Also, FWIW, I don't notice any fingerprints, but I've noticed a few black marks from my keys (my truck key has a rubberized coating on the top).

I guess I'm not entirely clear on the utility of the case. If you can't use the springport with the case, then the only added benefit is an extra layer around the already sturdy edge?

Am I missing something?

I'd rather my case opened on the side. And you're forgetting about style.

No, that's about it AFAIC. Added layer of protection for minimal added size.

You can sync with the case on the Edge

Palm OS Version 3.5 (or earlier?) allows IR hotsyncing. Maybe this is what Handspring was talking about.

Finally got mine (so what if I'm a little slow out of the gate...). Real nice! I was slightly surprised to find that it's covered with pimples, as opposed to dimples. Classy doesn't begin to describe it (and I won't have to listen to those damn "it's a tricorder, har har har" comments).
