If you're using a Deluxe (that's the one with the real hair...) then you'll also need another piece of software to do the IrDA communication with the phone, since it's not built into the OS.
I use IrLink from www.iscomplete.com, which you can trial for either 15 or 30 days, I think, with an 8210, which is the previous version of that phone (but it's the Visor that's the issue wrt needing more software, not the phone).
There are alternatives to IrLink, I gather, though I've not used them.
Install IrLink, and follow the instructions carefully - you'll also need a library file from the 3Com IR update.
I find the simplest thing to do is to leave most apps set to Cradle in the IrLink setup; check the 'redirect cradle box, tap the 'mixed' button in the same screen screen and then at the bottom of the next page, set Network to IrDA 1.0 and tap on Done.
In the Palm OS modem preferences, set the country correctly, speed doesn't really matter- mine is presently set to 57,600, and flow control to Automatic.
The initialisation string depends on what you want to connect to.
If I'm connecting to an analogue modem and want to use 14,400 data, then the init string has to be
AT+cbst=14,0,1;
If I want to make a digital end-to-end connection, for example to the Demon Internet Orange on-net POP at 9,600bps, then I have to use
AT+cbst=71,0,1;
instead. I can't remember what the init string is for 28.8 data on the 8310 using HSCSD; your network should be able to tell you. For analogue 28.8, it's AT+CBST=16,0,1;
Enter the appropriate string, set up the usual ISP settings in the Network prefs panel, enable IR on the phone and tap the Connect button on your Visor, or just start a net-enabled app, like ICQ or Blazer.
If you want to use GPRS on the phone, then you'll need to check on the exact dial string to use in the ISP settings, and the appropriate modem init string; I think the number to dial is just *99#, but some networks will want other options to specify access information.
HOWEVER: there is a timing issue of some sort in OS 3.1, and some programs have an irritating habit of getting lost somewhere in the Visor and not paying attention to the IR port often enough. As a result, the phone times out and drops the connection; you can tell this is about to happen, certainly on the 8210 and 7110 so presumably also on other models, since the IR icon on the phone will flash, instead of staying on. More than about 7 or 8 secs of flashing, and you're about to lose the call.
Chief culprits that I've found for this are Eudora and AvantGo mobile connect; Blazer 1 also did it, but the last time I tried Blazer 2 beta it was ok, as is Proximail, Multimail, ICQ and PalmVNC.
If you want to use something like AOL for Palm, then you don't need to worry about the Network prefs, since AOL uses its own protocol; in that case, you need to go back into the 'mixed' settings page of IrLink, and set AOL to use 'IrDA 1.0' The same applies for other programs you want to use without TCP/IP, such as Online, the vt100 emulator, for example.
Hope this helps,
Nigel.
