When I was in college I took a class on substance abuse. One of the tell tale signs of alcoholism was if you found yourself drinking alone.

This afternoon I was doing a late-day hotsync (market closing prices, news, sports, etc. on Avantgo and email) with a rum (Mount Gay) and coke in hand. And it makes me wonder....can I count my VDX as a "drinking buddy"?

And if my VDX could join me for a drink, what would it be? "Make mine a Manhattan, straight up...and a double shot of Eveready Alkalines for my little translucent buddy here."

I have DrinkBoy as an AvantGo channel, so I'd say 'yes'.

Don't worry about Miradu. I just posted an advert for my new Garden Weasel SB Module to distract him. He should tilt at that windmill for a bit.

I think this 'sign' is a bunch of hooey (when taken as some sort of 'proof' in and of itself). Perhaps if one _only_ drinks alone or drinks to excess when they're alone, that might suggest something, but I'd hardly consider having a drink while alone once in a while a 'sign' that one needed to check into Betty Ford.

I agree with Toby. I freely admit to having a beer on those lazy Sunday afternoons, regardless of company (or lack thereof). I think there's more of a propensity toward alcoholism if it's on your mind enough that you have to designate certain times and/or situations where drinking is "ok."

Anyway, I picked option 2 because of it's subtle humor with using the term "rationalize" (which alcoholics are famous for).

Yeah, but I consider beer a real drink as well.

Yes, an imperial stout.

scotch.

A good single malt hits the spot from time to time.

bourbon. something to that effect.

Nope, bourbon is too close chemically to formaldehyde for my tastes.

Must not be a fan of Aspartame (NutriSweet/Equal), either. Turns into formaldehyde in room temps.

Actually, it seems that quite a bit of stuff is linked to formaldehyde. For example, at least 20% of the chemicals at your standard photo minilab are! Don't breathe too deeply when you drop your film off!

Another "tell tale" signs is using a picture of Keith Richards as your avatar on web discussion boards!!!!

Best Dennis Leary Quote (paraphrased):

quote:
Recently, I heard Keith Richards say "Kids should not do drugs." Keith Richards. Keith, we can't do any more drugs, 'cause you already ... did them all. We have to wait until you're dead and smoke your ashes!

Surely You Jest

If my VDX and I could throw down a shot of Wild Turkey with anyone in the world it would be Keith Richards. In fact, I think Keith would make a great spokesman for Handspring. Surely the advanced features of Datebook Plus would help make up for any number of diminishing braincells, and I have a handy app that converts ounces into grams for those more "complex international transactions".

Has anyone considered a Breathalizer Module???

I tried that software ("Drunk") one evening and it said I should have been passed out when I was only mildly buzzed. So I stopped by the police station (walked there) and wanted to try a breathalizer to uh- calibrate my calculations but the dispatcher I knew had just gone off duty. I never do drink without my visor. Excellent conversation piece. "Want to see my monkey?" (Thanks to Eruptor for this tasteless and utterly useless pick-up line! www.portapets.com)

Cool Geesh!

Hey Keefer, do you find traces of blood in your alcohol stream?

Ok, that was LAME! Sorry everyone.

Next, portapets should be kept away from little kiddies. I had portakitty, and a 10-year-old relative who swiped my IIIxe had a tough time figuring out what that monkey was doing.

I hope they never found out....

And jeesh Keefer, you're a cheapskate! Buy your lil' translucent buddy a Duracell!

You have no idea. Remember Mike Myers' old SNL skit, Sprockets? Yes, I share that name (nickname for Dietrich). It was hell in junior high, but had dividends in College (ok, not really...)

Nope, I'm not. I can't stand artificial sweeteners. I like good old cane sugar (there's probably a local issue with that too, subconsciously).

Ahhh yes, cane sugar...from which we distill that most wonderful of spirits, rum.

I once observed that Whiskey was the hard liquor of the 1960's, Gin was the hard liquor of the 1970's, Vodka the distilled spirit of the 1980's and Rum, the elixor of the 1990's. Perhaps tequila for the turn of the century? Are there other nominees? Hell, who volunteers to serve on the nominating committee?

Now a proof sensing module (envision an extendible antenae-like probe that you would dip into your cocktail), that would be cool...especially if it doubled as a wireless module transmitter.

Tequila or Scotch gets my nomination.

Actually, a much more useful (imo) module would be a homebrewing module which could determine specific gravity (in the several scales used), IBUs, SRM, ABV, and ABW. Now _that_ would be an interesting module (although I'm dubious of the feasibility of some of that).
