how to restore to new SM card?

I just bought a larger SmartMedia card for the memplug module I use in my Prism. I backed up the data on the card (well, actually, I used a card reader to copy the data to my PC) then copied that data back to the new card. Unfortunately, I got a lot of missing *.prc errors and "not found" type errors. So I'm back to my smaller capacity card for now.

What is the correct way to do this? Should I use PI Backup to back up the card, copy that backup to the PC, then back to the new card? The solution is probably quite obvious, but I'm feeling very dense these days. Someone enlighten me, please?
