VisorCentral Yesterday and Today

Is it just me, or has visorcentral seemed to slow down from where it used to be? A year ago, this place was buzzing, lots of articles, commentary, discussion etc. This used to be my primary hangout being a handspring and palm OS enthusiast, but lately am looking to other places. This is not to be critical, but what's going on here?

Where are you hanging out now? I need a place similar to this, but I just can't find it.

I'm sorry to say this but I have a feeling that after September 11th this site has become boring. We all were affected by the terrorist attacks, but come on people we cannot let those animals take over our enthusiasm. Alan Graham was doing a good job for VC, but now where are all those poeple.

Wake up VC, we have a life to live not a life to waste.

Al

I really think VC has been slowly going away even before sep. 11.
I am new to this board but been using a visor for over a year.

My personal opinion is that the Die-hard visor fanatics have sold thier handsprings and jumped ship. so they are probably on other sites that pertain to what ever stupid piece of crap handheld device the have know.

Darn sellout, band-wagon, <snap... mind your language!>!!

I don't really want to drag people to another site as a result of this thread, but just to look into what is going on with visorcentral. This should be the primary site to learn and exchange about visor products I would hope.

Perhaps things have slowed down a bit here because things have slowed down in the PDA world in general.

I routinely visit PDABuzz, PalmInfocenter and PalmStation and have noticed that the frequency of news articles, reviews and software announcements have slowed in general over the summer.

Who is our current lineup of moderators and editors? It would be great to have a re-introduction of the staff.

Possibly the honeymoon's over. Handspring has been around a while. VC has been around a while. It's more of an established community than a fledgling.

let's see...

Marcus Adolfsson is runs and maintains the site.

In the technical crew that runs the site it's Marcus, Kenny, and Anthony.

in the editorial staff we have

James Hromadka as Editor-in-cheif
Alan Graham as i think co-editor-in-cheif

Writers are as follows in no particular order (these are the active ones)

me - Michael Ducker
Scott Hanselman (I think he's on a break though)
Jack Southworth (well he hasn't written in a long time, but he's active on the boards)

There are many many many! writers who have not written many articles (mainly 1 or 2), or are not very apparent on the boards. I wish I could name them all off to you, but I don't know them..

Moderators are (They can be writers too) (I have put your sn's in, feel free to edit this post posting your real name)

MarkEagle
ToolKit
Hoser_back_home
Homer

Maybe one day you'l see bios of us all on an about page.. . not soon though (i think)

I don't think things have slowed down all that much, but i think Imabug is right in saying that the market and slowdown in product announcements has something to do with it!

Likely, but you should see the things he asks me to look over... Or maybe you shouldn't because they are frightful...

It could be argued that spending all day posting to a Visor forum isn't the best way to 'live life' either.

It wouldn't be a hard argument to make either.

That's more what it seems like to me; there are still plenty of posts made every day. The news and product reviews have slowed down, but the VC staff can't really be faulted if there's not much PDA news or many new Visor-related products to review.

It was about a year from the release of the original Visor Solo, Visor, and Visor Deluxe to the release of the Platinum and Prism last year. When the VPL & VPR hit the market, they were a lot more buzzworthy than the Neo & Pro; Sony and Handera had yet to do their high-resolution and soft-graffiti voodoo, and the Prism blew the Palm IIIc display out of the water. Sony's first Clie did have Memorystick expansion, but it was selling poorly. Palm had yet to incorporate SD or CF into its new lineup; the only new thing they had last fall was the m100. In a word, as far as VC was concerned, Handspring was still da bomb!

In the year since, other PDA's seem to have caught up with Handspring's expansion concept, and passed them in the display department. New Springboards are appearing with less frequency, and when they do they're things like Stepkeeper and those electro-massager and brain-wave modules I keep expecting to see on an infomercial.

I've been hanging around VC since January or so of 2000 (originally I was Usonian - I had to reregister because my old account stopped letting me post), and I think things seem slow because the hardcore supporters of Handspring's initial product line are feeling a little bit put out by the lackluster improvements offered by the Neo and Pro (16 mb RAM is nice, though), and worried about their Springboard investments with the news that the Treo has no Springboard slot.

I'll admit to being concerned myself... I love my Prism/Stowaway/Eyemodule/HS Modem/Matchbook/Backup Module/StarTAC/cables4pdas setup, but I don't see myself buying another 160x160 PalmOS device as an upgrade. I really want an Eyemodule 2, but I don't know if I should drop $200 on it if the next color Handspring is going to be a disappointment. (Aside from the fact that I can't afford it right now, anyway )

And then there's the economy; As a personal example, I'm currently making less than I was two years ago, even though my skill set has multiplied several times over what it was back then. I had a great job at the beginning of this year, and enough income to blow on PDA peripherals. (yeah, yeah, I shoulda been saving it, not buying toys.) Like most of my friends of the last couple of years, I got laid off in February. I was fortunate enough to land a job within a couple of months, even though it meant a severe paycut; a lot of my former coworkers from Stan Lee Media are still looking for steady work. My point is, it's hard to get as excited about the Next Big Thing when you know you won't be able to afford it anyway.

Anyway, just my few thoughts. Lots of online communities go through changes like this, and I think they also go through cycles. I've seen threads like this on some Usenet groups too. In the end, life always goes on.

-Andy

The posting has slowed noticeably, (I should talk, I mainly lurk as I don't have too much time to spend writing out lengthy posts ). However, as far as PDA news slowing down due to the economy.... if you go to a few of the other palm related sites, no plugs here, but say Palminfocenter, there are multiple news stories daily. We can go a full week without much in the line of news. I think that is due to an editiorial slant towards Visors, but more visitors can be attracted mith more front page news. I think the discussion at other sites is horrible though. A lot of trolls, kneejerk reactions and schoolyard taunts.

This used to be my main PDA info site, but I only come here for the discussion now. By the time news is posted here, I have known it for a few hours at worst, days at best.

Man, I leave this place for awhile and there are some big changes. Place looks nice. I got a Jeep Grande Cherroke and I've been spending a lot of my surfing time over there.
I remember when Eagle and Hoser were members

I'm going to start pending some more time here.
