Question Help, ready to move to color, but question timing... now or later

Hi,
I've had my VDX since January 2000, and now want to move up to a color pda. But, I have heard some questionable comments on the Prism and not being able to see the screen clearly outdoors. I've also heard several good things about the Compaq iPAQ.

Has anyone heard if Handspring is in the process of correcting there Prism's outdoor visibility problem. I have a buyer for my VDX but, don't want to sell if I need to wait awhile (not a long while though).

Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

Well.. as much as I love the Prism. it's getting old. Very old, fast. I would NOT reccomend buying the prism right now .I'm sorry the Sony Clie N770's are SO much nicer!!!

The rumor is that Handspring will release a new color device August-September? So it's up toyou.

I really do love my Prism, but I have to agree Miradu, I am ready for a change. If anything, just give me a Reflective screen. I would love to view the screen outdoors.

If I were just now getting rid of my Deluxe, I would get the Clie. As neat as the iPaq is, I am not sure I am ready for PocketPC. I still love the PalmOS. Depending on how many Springboard Modules you have and how many you would like to have could play a role on whether or not to wait for Handspring.

I really question what HS will release next. If it is a Color Version of the Edge, then it does nothing for me. I would have to use the EdgeConnector and that would not suit me when it comes to the MemPlug. If they were to release a Deluxe size device with a Clie type screen, then they would have my attention.

One thing is for sure, if I did not have a Stowaway, plus all these modules, I would trade my Prism for the Clie.

That's exactly it... If it wasn't for all the modules/accessories, I wouldn't mind trying another model.

Don't get me wrong, I love my modules and all (I just recently upgraded to a Prism... yes, I know, the whole point of this is about how old the prism is , but I don't regret the upgrade at all), but I wouldn't mind upgrading to a Clie.

I'm with GSR, as well, on the connector. It wouldn't suit me to have an additional adapter to use my existing modules. It bulks up the unit even more than the Prism.

Ditto. I like my Prism, except for the size/weight and the lack of visibility outside. The Clie is appealing, except the crappy buttons really turn me off.

I'd like to see HS bring out a color model with a reflective screen like the new color CLIE and with a smaller form factor - but not so small that you need a sled to use springboards. That defeats the purpose of having a Visor in my mind.

I love the Prism too but uh . . . I upgraded to a Clie. Sorry HS

I say put together a list of whats important to you. A PDA has to meet your needs. Do you need or want High resolution? or Is form factor important? How about 8 or 16 bit color?

Post your criterias and maybe we can help you

BTW miradu2000 its the Clie 710C.

Luv my VPR

I luv my VPR and have been fully satisfied with the purchase. I upgraded from and old Palm Pro 2mg. I do not use it outside much other than to check a phone number in the car or something like that so that is not an issue. It is a tad bigger than some other PDA's, but I do not wear it so that is not a big issue. I can still fit it in my back pocket or cargo pockets when heading to Home Depot for measurements and calculations.

My advise would be, if you do not need the latest greatest, the VPR can do it all (may need a springboard or two) and you will get it cheaper (perhaps lower if the price wars continue) than the latest models.

I was very excited about the new Clie coming out, and considered switching. I recently compared my Prism, the new Clie, and the M505 side by side at CompUSA. The M505 screen is simply too dark to be in consideration. The Clie's new screen is cool, and the pictures on the demo looks awesome with the higher resolution. I also like the Clie's form factor.

However, the Prism's screen is still the brightest and easiest to read, by far. True, it is hard to read outdoors, but 99 percent of the time I want to read it indoors. I'm very happy with my Prism and will be keeping it for the time being.

My ultimate machine would be the shape of the Sony, a little bit lighter, Sony's 320 x 320 screen, a springboard slot, and the brilliance of the Prism's screen. Still waiting.

If I were you, go for the Prism if you are using it indoors; the Clie if you are using it alot outdoors.

Joe

Is the size of the prism that much of an issue?
even though its bigger then some competitors its only 6.9 oz
is this weight really a burden? the only thing the size of Prism prevents me from doing is carrying it around in my shirt pocket but that's the case for just about any handheld.

I agree with GSR13 ...if a color edge is what HS has in mind for thier new color model its not worth it. Spring board modules fit a lot nicer in a Prism. Basically the desciding vote for me to get a Prism was the spring boards i already invested in. Although after i got mine and compared it with other units available I was glad to see that prism hadn the most impressive looking display. And until more software optimizing CLie's improved resolution become more readily available I dont see a reason i should abandon My VPR just yet.

Thumbs up

I would agree with all most everything in this post except that I am still leary of Sony's ms becoming a standard. I love my Prisim and there are times that it would be nice to use it outdoors but, it is not a big thing. I figure in a year the PDA market will be a lot differnt then it is right now and to make a change right now would be just wasting money because the best is still yet to come. Prisim rocks.

I'm waiting for a Prism with a Visor Deluxe form factor, a reflective screen (that is easily readable in dim lighting / almost as bright as the Prism. Is that possible?), a grafitti area that lights up, and a battery pack system. I don't think that is asking too much.
