I did the right thing (or wrong thing) and ordered writerights for my new prism, and to be honest having never used a screen protector on my palm pilot (one of the originals even before the were bought by US robotics) I wasn't sure what to expect, but my screen looks kind of fuzzy and crappy with them on.

I cleaned the screen beforehand using the brainwashes (is this any better than just using glas cleaner? I dont think so).

Is it just me or are these things a waste of time and money?

Which ones did you buy? Did you buy the ones for the Palm IIIC or the regular ones for the 0ther palms?

The regular WW do make the screen blurry, but the IIIS ones should. As far as I know. I have them. but havent used them yet.

The Palm IIIc Writerights work pretty well. I couldn't smooth out several small air bubbles. Tapping on scroll bars is more difficult. I've scratched every PDA I owned, but scratches should now be a thing of the past.

In regards to Writerights and color PDAs it is important to use the WRs that are made for color screens, the grayscale Palm III or Visor Deluxe type WRs have a pyramidal texturing that cause moire and fuzziness on a color screen. FWIW, I have a grayscale Visor Deluxe and I prefer the smooth and glossy WinCE type WRs because they look and feel better to me, but really that's just a personal preference. Get the right type of WRs for your taste and you'll be pleased with the look and extra scratch protection it affords your PDA.

Try 4 mil clear vinyl from a fabric store. It's cheap, very clear, works great, zero adhesive and virtually indestructable. Why spend $18 bucks on WW for 12 "replaceable" protectors, when you can spend $3 bucks on a square yard of vinyl-and have screen protectors for the next 50 years.

fabric store sells different guages of clear vinyl. i bought 0.2m if that stuff for 25cents.

so far, i've used this stuff for my former Vx, and my current plat. lasts like 8 months per application, and easily removable without residue.

btw

by the way, appplying the vinyl can be tricky. u need a clean screen, use a can of compressed air and BLOW the dust off! then after you lay the vinyl on, use a creditcard to budge out the air bubbles thru the sides.

takes some patience, but once its on, its on. i spend 30 minutes massaging all the bubbles out while watching seinfeld heh...

I saw WW for the 3C that a friend has. We didn't think much of it and are only going with the covering of the grafiti area only method of screen protection.

Did you mean "crappy" as in dog do-do or "carppy" as in the fish?

Either which way the vinyl is the way to go... as for the bubbles that will certainly be there after you apply the vinyl...

first- be certain that you clean both the PDA screen and especially the vinyl. Virtually all of the bubbles will disappear on their own after a few days unless there is a speck of dust to hold the vinyl up.

second- Be sure to cut a small corner off of the vinyl so when you want to remove it you can get a toothpic under the corner.

I have had the same piece of vinyl on for several months and it is still going strong.

Just to clarify,
yes they were the colour version,
no there were no bubbles under the sheet (it did take me 3 goes to get it right).
yes the screen was clear first (used brain wash even though it was a brand new unit)

I used it for a day but eventually had to take it off, I think I will end up short cutting them so they just cover the graffiti area.

I did find the color version more difficult to apply, but the finished product looks good. However, I did prefer the textured feel of the old model rather than the new, smooth version...Too bad the texture made the prism look so carppy. (Or Crappy...whichever).

IIIc WriteRights

After I got my second VPr, I went out and purchased a pack of WRs. I figured the ones for the IIIc were the right ones to use, since the package indicated specifically "For Color Palm OS Devices". So I got them home...

1) The WR doesn't fit into the ENTIRE screen space. There's really only coverage for the actual screen space, which leaves spaces at the sides of the screen window - where I find the majority of dust gathering.

2) These bloody things are IMPOSSIBLE to get on the first time out. (Partially because of the size issue I mentioned in #1) I went through 10 (yes, TEN!) WRs before I managed to get one on that was straight and relatively bubble & pinch free.

3) I actually find my Graphiti accuracy has lessened since putting the WR on the screen. Since the Graphiti area is not as sensitive as it was (without the cover) I find myself writing MUCH harder than I ever had to on my old PalmIII or on the VPr before the WR. Also, and this may just be the way I write, but it misses characters. I tried writing "This is a test of the Graphiti handwriting recognition system" both before and after attaching the WR. Before - PERFECT. Not a flaw (or at least, not one that I didn't cause myself.) After - My VPr missed several characters, and punctuation is about half as accurate.

Maybe it has something to do with the differences in digitizers used on the IIIc and VPr, but I don't think I'll be attaching another one, unless, that is, they come out with Prism-specific WRs.

Just about the only positive things I have to say are:

1) Attaching the WR DOES prevent the screen/Graphiti area from getting scratched. I had my first VPr about 3 weeks before it's replacement came (problem with the battery recharge light), but in that time I had already managed to put a big honkin' scratch in the Graphiti area.

2) It makes the screen feel "tighter" and gives the feel of working on a more "glass-like" screen, such as the PalmIII.

But would I go out and drop $25 on another supply? I'd have to seriously think about it.

The writewrites for the color palms aren't bad. What they should do is make them clear for the display and textured for the graffiti area (if they can even do that). The smoothness of the WW does make it a little difficult to write sometimes. I've just about adjusted to it.

Alternate covers, and dirt under screen

Well, first I'd like to say that I have been using overhead projector sheets. Cut them to the visor screen size, but a little taller, and they fit under the plastic moulding. This way they stay on without any adhesive, so no worry about air bubbles. The length between replacements it relative to the quality of the screen covers, but even with the cheap ones there are enough sheets to make around 40 (I think that's what I calculated.) They work great for me.

I actually got the Write Rights soon after getting my VDx for graduation. I had problems including brown spots on the WRs themselves (probably just a bad batch) and not being able to get them on right, and then low visibility. Blah :P Luckily Staples let me return 'em.

Now for my problem. Somehow a bit of dirt or a hair got under the plastic. No, not under the screen protectors, but under the screen itself. It's only a few mm long, but being a visual person it annoys the heck out of me! Any suggestions? And could this mean a problem with the screen that could lead to later problems (just being paranoid).
