here's what to do...
Okay, do this:
On a Win 2000 machine, remove the driver again... by that I take it you mean you are using the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard to uninstall/unplug the Handspring USB device entry. You may notice more than one Handspring USB device. Get rid of all of them. If you see, near those entries, a generic term that just says "USB Device", get rid of that too. Don't remove anything your are completely unsure of.
Then unplug your USB connection and reboot the PC.
Open Windows Device Manager.
Have your Visor firmly connected to the cradle or cable and you plug into the USB port.
Observe the Device Manager, see if anything changed, even a flicker for a moment as you plugged in.
Now try to HotSync. Again, watch Device Manager carefully... after building drivers you should see "Handspring Handheld" or some such in Device Manager while the HotSync is being attempted. If it shows up as "Unknown Device" you have probably damaged your Visor or the USB connector and need a hardware repair.
If you see no change in Device Manager at all, even after using some of the other cables or cradles, the last thing that could be wrong is that you have the imfamous Intel 82801AA or BA/BAM USB to PCI Host Controller (see if it's there under the "Universal Serial Bus" section of Device Manager). These are the worst USB junk put out by Intel, they are not fully supported under Win XP or 2000 -- they are a real scandal because you will find this junk on even very new budget computers from major manufacturers trying to trim production costs. In this case, the USB transceivers on these 3 PCs has, each one of them, slowly degraded in the signal range... you'll be able to use low bandwidth uni-directional USB devices like a mouse, keyboard, etc. but any demanding USB device will fail. The solution? Treat yourself to a USB 2.0 add-in card, re-install your software and plug your Visor cradle into that and you'll be fine again.
Lastly, if you can borrow a serial cradle and try the Visor with that, you'll gain some insight into the nature of the problem.
Most or all of this info is on Handspring's web site and a senior tech support agent at Handspring will know all about this stuff inside and out, up and down, left and right. Those are the experts.
Best of luck!
