Question slight flicker normal?

I have a brand new Prism and I think it's beautiful. But the screen flickers/blinks occasionally. Is this normal? I've only had it for two days so I can still get an exchange. I don't mind it so much now but I'm worried it will get worse. Maybe others wouldn't notice it much, but I always notice things like this. I'm just curioug if it's like this for everyone.

Cool

Ok, sorry, I just did a search (I'm brand new here) and found the threads on the flicker. I'm just glad it's not defective.

Another lame question (sorry, I'm just curious): My Visor Deluxe came with a hard removeable lid, and the lid fits the Prism. Did anyone get a lid with the Prism, or know if there is some reason not to use it? I was surprised the Prism didn't come with one.

I got a hard removable lid with my prism. I don't use it but it came in the box.

I'd like to read about the screen flicker -- I too have noticed it and wondered about it. what was the thread you found.

There are several threads. Do a search on "flicker."

Hmm, my Prism is new, not refurbished. Maybe they stopped manufacturing lids too soon and didn't have enough? Maybe I should be happy because it means my Prism is a more recent one and hasn't been sitting around for a year (I'm thinking about the battery, since it ages even when not used). But probably I'll bug Handspring about a lid. I'm sure they have a few spares for fussy customers.

I do like my nice Prism! There is the flicker thing, but I'm surprised at how few complaints there are about this product on discussion boards. Seems customers were really happy, so it's sad that it was discontinued. Perhaps it's the module developers who were having trouble selling their products (some of them silly and/or overpriced) and that's what did the Visors in.

No it is not!

Try downloading Handspring's contrast utility. That should fix it.

I think this is the link

Hey din--If you don't get anywhere with handspring on the lid for your prism email me ([email protected]) with your address and I'll send you mine. I'll never get rid of my prism and I always use the case so I just don't need the lid.

I'm using just the handspring slim leather case. It looks nice but I don't think it probably affords much protection if its dropped. Directcase.com has the Rhino aluminum slider discounted for 19.95. About have myself talked into buying that.

The Two Types Of Flicker

Just to clear this up, there are two types of flickering that the Prism screen can produce. One is fixed by the contrast utility mentioned above, and appears as flickering lines throughout the entire screen. These lines are especially noticable if you tilt the screen back and forth while viewing the screen. The contrast utility really takes care of that problem.

The other type of flicker happens occasionally, is more noticable especially when the screen background is white, and looks as though the screen momentarely flickers off and then on again. It's almost imperceptable, but apparently all Prisms do it.

".....(I'm thinking about the battery, since it ages even when not used). But probably I'll bug Handspring about a lid. I'm sure they have a few spares for fussy customers......."

I've had my Prism for two years now, and so far the battery has held up very well. I always leave the Prism in the cradle when I can, and top off the batteries on the road using an emergency charger with rechargable NiMH AA batteries in it. In fact I've rarely had the battery level drop below even 90%, and according to some people, the rechargable could last up to 4 years if treated this way.

Sadly, I'm eying the NR-70 V right now, but, I gotta say, other than outdoors in direct sunlight, the Prism screen is a beautiful color screen, and I'll miss it when I do move on. Good luck with yours!

Dear WizardB,

You are very kind to offer me the lid, especially since I'm new here and haven't yet showed off my charm. I'll try Handspring first and e-mail you if I have no luck. The lid wasn't omitted by mistake, because instead I got a thin white disposable plastic thingie molded to the shape of the Prism top. But it was also a really good deal, and maybe the lid is partly why. I'd only use it on rare occasions, when I don't want a bulky case.

Thanks for the info Gooselab. I was curious about the second type (occasional) flicker. It's not that bad, but I was worried there's a problem that'll get worse. Fortunately I discovered the contrast utility right after I got the Prism. I really don't like looking at a very bright screen and I was happy that it could be dimmed. Also I like to keep things "forever" (rather than constantly upgrading) and dimming the screen probably lengthens its life span (and that of the battery).

What a nifty little thing! Now I have no excuse not to keep myself organized.

Do you have a URL where you got your emergency charger?
