Excellent idea!

Someone had their thinking cap on! That is a wonderful way to kick off the Treo.

The bidding is already over $900! Anyone care to guess how high it will get?

I bet the final bid will be $1800.

This would be a Handspring fan's ultimate Christmas gift!

The last Handspring auction went for $4,550.00 (the 1 millionth Visor and VisorPhone)...

While it's all for a very noble cause, my wallet (and my wife!) says I need to wait for it to appear in retail...

Just another example of Handspring's selflessness. I hope that this bid goes through the roof! (For entertainment and charitable reasons, of course!) I'll just use the final bid as justification to the wife that I'm in essense getting a $4K or so rebate!

I'm actually way off on my prediction. It'll probably be what MarkEagle said.

Good grief. Does anybody else find this as ridiculous as I do? I can't believe that someone would spend that kind of money for a PDA/phone. In my opinion, that is shameless.

. . . Not if you are someone that planned a large donation to a charity - just another way to accomplish it.

Yes, you're right, but I still think it's foolish. How many people who are looking to dump some money into a charity for tax reasons are looking to do that on eBay, though? Then again, I am (obviously) not in a position where I need to find ways to get rid of my money, so I guess I shouldn't express my opinion about something of which I know nothing. I am of the peasant mindset and to a peasant, it's unimaginable.

Selfless?

"We really appreciate the generosity of Handspring. It is innovative technology leaders like Handspring that help make eBay the most vibrant marketplace for technology products," said John Herr, vice president of technology and entertainment for eBay. "Their donation of the first Treo communicator will help make 'Bids to Help Kids' a great charity effort."

I hate to be cynical, but donating the first Treo for a charity auction looks to me like a very smart marketing move, not a generous act of selflessness.

Keith, I think it's a little of both.

BTW how many Matchbook Products have been donated?

I agree. I don't think it was entirely selfless. I thought it was brilliant. First off, it is a great way to launch the Treo. You can't buy that kind of advertising. Handspring saved a ton of money PLUS they come out smelling like a rose. Regardless of whether or not we think they are doing it for the "right" reasons, they are doing it and everyone wins.

Lightbulb

Maybe Compaq will get the top bid so they can tear it apart and dissect it.

Yeah - then they could make it real big with crappy battery life, then they could get the expansion we all crave by adding a sleeve to it
