Question

Can anyone who have an 8 MB flash SB tell me if it's possible to overwrite a db in RAM for say, the Addressbook, after having copied it to the 8 MB?

I wanted to buy an 8MB, and use PZ to copy and zip data that I want to backup (Address, Calendar, Memo, some apps and pdbs) onto the 8MB to use part of its capacity as a backup module. However, does the PalmOS let you squash the existing DB in RAM when you unzip another from the Flash?

I had asked this question before, but got no clear answers, since everybody simply recommended that I buy the backup or the flash 8 module, and quite courteously explained what each does. I'm hoping somebody has actually tried what I described above.

The simple answer is no. The 8 meg module will run programs but will not "handle" writing dynamic data to it. What you can do is move your program to the module and keep the (usually much smaller) data files on your Visor.

Even though I keep the module almost full, I've found that when playing "action" games off the module, they tend to crash after several minutes.

Others can explain why this is the case.

Hope this helps.

Goyena--
I haven't actually tried this, but judging by the way File Mover asks you if you want to overwrite an existing file on the Springboard (if, for instance, you are copying AddressDB to the module for backup but already had an older "version" stored), it may ask you the same thing if you try to copy a file from the board to RAM, like if your AddressDB in RAM becomes corrupted or something.

I back up my built-in app DBs to my module too, in case I have to hard reset. (Naturally, I haven't had to yet, but if I didn't have the flash board, I'm sure I would have!)

If it doesn't let you overwrite the RAM file from the board, you could always go to File Mover, delete the RAM file, and copy from the module. (File Mover shows app DBs, which is why I usually use it instead of the built-in Memory app for deletes. It's more complete.)
