Unhappy

I don't know how I managed to do this, but I broke my Stowaway. On the right-most fold, both the top and bottom hooks snapped off. The keyboard still works, but won't snap closed on that last corner.

I'd been keeping it securely in my tote bag, and since I don't use the tote bag to block line backers or as a soccer ball, I'm a little peeved. I didn't drop the keyboard or force it open or closed. I tried getting through to Targus tech support on the phone, but have only reached voicemail. I've got an article due tomorrow at a magazine I freelance for, so I broke down and bought another.

I have the same problem with my hinges. And I store mine in a RhinoPak 2000 - you would think it is strong enough to protect the unit.

I think that the trouble with mine came when the metal clasp along the right-hand side bent, not allowing one of the two connections to close. That put additional pressure on the hinges, which are fairly thin plastic covering reinforcing rods.

It still works, but I'm also a little miffed. And the unit is what, four months old? Goes to show you - always send in that warranty card....

Yup. 4 months old. Guess that's the life span.

I didn't even think of selling the old one. <shrug>

I've had mine for 11 months with no problems at all, and in the year+ since the Stowaway came out I've seen very, very few posts regarding Stowaway problems.

I don't know how much help Targus would be with a broken latch... it looks like the latches on the hinged portions of the keyboards could be replaced without too much trouble, but the ones on the main sections of the keyboard don't look very replaceable.

As to meeting your magazine deadline, I'm not sure I follow the necesseity of buying a new unit ASAP, since you said yourself that the keyboard still works. It is always irritating to be unable to contact a company for support the instant a problem arises... but it's not like you couldn't have written your article on the non-closing Stowaway while waiting to hear back from Targus.

stowaway

My stowaway has been broken since the first week I bought it , It doesn't latch but it is fully functional otherwise... I keep it in a Targus case designed specifically for the keyboard so i'm not sure how I broke it , It has to be folded in order to fit in the case anyway so as long as I stuff it in and zipper it quickly it's ok

I'm going to be traveling. I don't want to risk the keyboard dying altogether while I'm stuck on a plane from NY to SF. A replacement is not a true necessity, but I'd rather not take my chances.

I had the same problem with my Stowaway a couple of months after I received it. I called Targus and they replaced it immediately, no questions asked. I was a little miffed that the construction was so flimsy, but very happy with their service. Try them and see what they say.

What kind of warrantee do they offer? I have one, but I don't have the box handy. As an aside, I dropped mine on a cement sidewalk. The paint on the case is a bit worse for wear, but functionally it's fine.

I believe the Targus warranty is for one year. I'm in the middle of returning mine as well. One day I closed it and one corner popped back immediately. No matter what I tried it wouldn't stay shut. So a few weeks ago I called and got that voicemail and left my information. I never received a response. I called again last week and a few days later had a response. My keyboard is fully functional too it just does not close.

I would just like to say that I am very, very impressed with the customer support Targus offers. I just had several keys start malfunctioning (it is an obvious hardware problem, not software) and so I called their tech support. There was no wait to talk to someone, and after only a few questions, they were sending me a replacement. They didn't ask how long I had had the keyboard or where I had purchased it from either; just what the problem was. You just don't get that kind of support from anyone.

Also, I had the little problem with the corner popping open, so I bent out the little metal piece on teh corner just a hair, and it's worked perfectly ever since.
