The new Psion unit is supposed to be out this week, rumors is that its quite a nice unit and looks great. Psion is a good product but lacks the marketing. I bet you HS knew that they needed to come out sooner than these guys. The Psion is rumored to have loads of ram, speed, and the style of the Palm V (no spring boards ?).

The psion units have always had better functionality than the microsoft ce units while still having most of the features like built in modem and external memory and drive support but that put them in a different category than the palm devices. They have never really been competitors. You mentioned Palm V style, do you mean they finally got rid of the tiny keyboard?

I don't recall seeing any new Psion project that _looks_ like the Palm V, let alone a Palm-like PDA.

Psion is supposed to bring out their Series 7. But just like the Series 5 was larger than the Series 3, so the S7 is still larger than the S5, with 4096-color color screen and a keyboard.

As far as Palm V "style", the S7 is a sleek-looking unit. Still sexy for a palmtop+ unit. And at a price of probably somewhere near $1000 retail (or whatever the current conversion of 700 UK pounds is), it's nowhere near the neighborho of a Palm V (and certainly not even in the same country as a Visor).

Psion is just about to announce a new organizer on Monday. Check out:
http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/flipside/flipside.htm

Look at the news for September 24.

This is a new "pocket size" organizer, called the ReTro. It looks to me like it's trying to compete more with the WinCE palm-size units, given that it's still a lot bigger than a Palm. It really resembles an HP calculator -- it still has a keyboard, and the display is very small and calculator-like.

Given the packaging, and Psion's near-zero marketing presense in the U.S., I think the Visor is the much better buy. If you want a Psion, the 5mx really looks like the machine to get.

UPDATE: After looking at this page a bit more, I'm thinking this has to be a hoax. I can't find mention of this item on any of the other Psion sites I know about. Can anyone else confirm this?

I've found a news article talking about the new Psion handheld, this time it's called the "Revo":
http://www.theregister.co.uk/990930-000004.html

This article sounds a lot more realistic. But there's no pictures.

Link to http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/flipside/flipside.htm is garbage. That machine existed 15 years ago, and it was called something like Psion II. Pay atention to the last paragraph:

"The ReTro will be available from 1st October 19errr...85 at all good stockists..."

I had one of those Psions pictured on http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/flipside/flipside.htm back in the early 90's. Somehow I managed to fry the LCD panel. My father still uses his but the keyboard starts acting up.

I think I will buy him a Visor.

According to the article though, the "Revo" is still in the Series 5 category... it says it's like the "5", not the "V" (since it never mentions the Palm V at all). So much for an Epoc32-based Palm-esque machine from Psion.

Unless someone else has another good pointer out there (Flipside, anyone?)

Wink

There is a picture in the October 19 issue of PC Magazine on page 64. Model number is Psion Series 5mx. You can probably view a picture on the web at www.pcmag.com.

Sorry, I checked and the Psion 5mx is not yet visible at the web site. Probably, PC Magazine doesn't update the web until the printed version is in circulation for a while.

Just to clear things up, the Psion 5mx is not the same as the new machine that's rumored to be announced this week.

The 5mx is the next-generation replacement of the older Series 5. The "Revo" is supposed to be a new, lower-end Series-5 type machine.
