Visorphone quandery: I want the free phone AND I want to keep my current Tel #

On a related note to the below thread on locked/unlocked Visorphones, I'm thinking of getting a Visorphone to replace my existing Motorola handset. Already having Voicestream month-to-month service (the only servie I've ever had with them), I figured why not get a free phone, even if it means committing to a 1 year plan. One big problem: Handspring/VS is telling me I can't just switch over to the new phone; I have to give up my current number/VS account.

Now, if according to the above post (and another thread it was linked to) Visorphones aren't locked, I don't understand why VS can't reprogram my current SIM for the new account. They program these things all the time; it's not like if you lose your SIM or it malfunctions you have to get a new Tel #. They will also let you change phones, and you can change plans and, I believe, even numbers.

I'm convinced there's some way to do this, and I'm wondering if anyone else has been in this position and solved the puzzle.

Call them up. Say hi very nicely to the rep. Ask to speak to that rep's supervisor. Tell him/her what you'd like. Be very nice.

pray.

...it costs handspring time and energy to set up a free vphone with an account... perhaps more time than is worth it for them

....you know, the ideal situation would be a conference call bewteen a supervisor at HS, VoiceStream, and yourself. Then you could all get it figured out.

Good luck, but I'm not optimistic for ya.

And I'd probably need to send them my current SIM to be reprogrammed, too.
