Because many of the board members hate new posts I try to save up all my stylus questions and post them here.
1) How long does the stylus last before it wears out? It looks like it can go for a long time before the stylus wears out.
2) Since Staples is carrying the visor they should carry accessories as well like the five pack of stylus, right?
3) Why not just sell the tips of the stylus?
4) How does the stylus-pen combo works. It got to be very small to have a pen and fit into the silo.
5) I know the visor stylus is a bit larger than the palm stylus so will the palm stylus fit into the silo? And are all the palm stylus the same?
6) Do you guys register your favorite programs?

1) A long, long time. I know someone with a stylus that is more than 2 years old.

2) That was a rhetorical question, right?

3) See answer to #1

[skipping questions I can't answer]

6) I assume you mean shareware apps. If you like an app enough to use it beyond the trial period, pay your bucks. Moral issues aside, by paying for an app you are casting a commercial ballot for "more of the same, please."

Billy,

1. I've never known a stylus to wear out. There's not enough friction between the screen and the stylus to do that.
2. The Staples I went to did not have styli for the Visor.
3. The Visor's included stylus is a one-piece construction, unlike the Palm's, so there's no way to sell the tips. This brings up another beef with the stylus: it doesn't have a reset pin that unscrews from the end, unlike the Palm's.
4. Can't answer this one, as I've never used a combo model. I have a Cross stylus, which is essentially a pen with a stylus tip instead of a ball point. It's nice, but once I got used to using the tiny stylus, the "pen" seemed to cumbersome. I probably unconsciously associate "real" pens with longhand and styli with Graffiti, so I don't use the Cross much anymore. (Some "no answer" -- Ha!)
5. The Palm stylus is bigger, not smaller than the Visor's, and won't fit in the Visor's silo.
6. My favorite programs, yes. There aren't that many, it's cheap, and it's honorable.

5) The Palm III series stylus is bigger in diameter than the Visor stylus, and thus will not fit in the Visor's silo. Don't know about the Palm V series stylus. But, the stylus for the first and second generation Palms (Palm 1000, 5000, Personal and Professional) are almost identical to the Visor stylus. However they were also the one lump of plastic design that the standard Visor stylus is. This does mean that third party stylus meant to fit the older Palms should fit the Visor.

Gameboy70 mentioned the lack of a reset pin, as the Palm III stylus have. The stylus in the "Visor Stylus 5-pack" do have a reset pin. But it is in the tip instead of the back. In the back there is a small Philips screw driver.

The reason I brought up the program is because I have a TI graphing calculator. There are many great programs for the TI calculator that no one charges. There are no programs on the TI that people charge for others to use. Everything is free and there are still thousands of programmers. I'm just not used to paying for programs that's all.

Red face

Sorry. Didn't mean for my response to be so preachy . . . I feel bad that you felt the need to explain. Perhaps I'm falling into old habits acquired during some of the usenet flame wars over pirating software.

BTW, the stock crappy stylus is safe if used in conjunction with a screen protector. Most folk prefer the added weight of one of the third party styli, but if money is tight . . .

If you know anyone with a Palm IIIe, they're giving out the cheap ass stylus for that as well.

I'm happy with my deluxe stylus, even though I might need a replacement for the TOP of it soon if I don't stop chewing on it while I"m reading

Anyone know if they're planning on making Palm stylii in colours? My girlfriend "stole" my green one and uses that for her IIIx, which happens to fit (too bad they can use ours but we can't use theirs). No matter I guess.

At any rate, get anything besides the stylus that comes with the Visor. You'd think with the Deluxe the least they could do would be to throw in a Deluxe stylus, but that would be asking too much

Question

Anyone used the Handspring combo stylus pen? I'd think the button would catch on things because it looks like it'd stick about 1/3 inch out the top of the visor.

As to the tips wearing out... The stylus for my Pilot 1000 wore out. It was almost unnoticable as it happened.

Finally I misplaced it and bought a replacement pack and noticed that my grafitti accuracy improved immediately! W

hat was happening, was that the tip got duller and developed a slightly flat spot.

It doesn't stick out at all because the stylus is about the same length as the stock stylus. It only appears longer but you will be fine.

I bought my VD about a month ago and it came with what I'm assuming to be a deluxe stylus because you can unscrew the tip and there is a reset pin and if you unscrew the other end it has a phillips screwdriver. I don't care for it though, my fingers slide down the smooth aluminum body when I write. I roughed it up with some fine sandpaper, which helped, but it's still too light for my taste.

Now that Staples is handling the Visor, I might bop down there this weekend and see what they have for accesories.

Thumbs down

BTW. I recently broke the tip off one of my Hanspring premium metal styli. All I did was drop it on the floor!
