Got the DL, and love it!

Well, I just got my Digital Link today, and I have to say I'm pretty impressed with it so far. Popped it into my Visor Prism, switched over my plan via activate.sprintpcs.com, and was rolling! I was using a SPH-I300 (the Samsung Palm/Phone) before and it was a good unit, but the screen was the worst of any color Palm, and there was no expandability for the unit. Plus, the battery life was terrible on that unit (rated at 100hrs standby, so it's really more like 48). So I decided to give this a try.

So far, I have to say I'm very impressed. The phone interface is very well thought out....

...wait, I just had my first Fatal Exception while doing a hotsync. Not cool....

Ok, maybe I should wait a few more days before posting my full review of this unit. So far, I love the interface. The sound quality is acceptable thus far. The weight of the combined unit is a bit of a drawback, but I'm more of a Palm user than a Phone user, so I can live with it. I am experiencing the same bug where the unit will power on the display randomly while sitting in the charging stand. Don't know about the ringer not ringing for some calls ... I'll check that out. It seems as though the ringer for incoming text messages is extremely quiet. I don't see any way to change this or increase the volume, so that's a bit of a letdown.

Will write more once I've had a few days to play with it....

Unhappy SPRIT Digital Link Touble

Wonder if anyone can help. After considerable drama with my first Digital Link (see thread Sprint Digital link for $189) and after being told by customer service that I would receive a replacement module by mail and waiting for seven days, I called to find out the status of my "return kit." I learned to my dismay that it was not processed. The customer service agent told me that I would need to go to a Sprint store and have, "the need for replacement/repair verified by an in-store technician." I was quite angry as no one bothered to call me with this information. I went to the store and they verified the on/off switch was broken but then didn't know how to proceed. They said they didn't have it in stock to process the exchange (they later discovered they did). So the store clerk called Customer Service to have them process the exchange. Again after 30 minutes on hold, they didn't know how to finalize the exchange!!!! Then, as luck would have it the technician came out with a new unit and they processed the exchange there.

Here's where the most recent trouble begins: The store clerk entered the serial number not the 11 digit ESN number to unlock my new Digital Link and now the phone doesn't work. Moreover, once the phone was unlocked the menu item "activate phone" disappears so that the correct number cannot be entered. Does anyone know what to do about this? Please help. Dealing with Sprint PCS Customer Service is a soul sucking experience.

ok, im really not new, used to follow the boards on a regular basis, but lost my password lol!. i just wanted to say i bought the sprint digital link this week. compared to the omni sky modem i had, it's a world of difference. here in los angeles, i couldnt connect maybe 1 out of 10 times here. with the digital link, it's a connection every time. my new job will require me to travel around the l.a. basin quite a bit, so this is a godsend. ( thank god i finally found work again!) i ordered the eb visor phone case (visor pro). Also i just wanted to add that maybe the sony has mp3 etc, but with my stowaway, and now digital link, the visor is still the best pda for the money. I've owned a palm Vx at one time, but ever since the visor came out(my old dx works like a charm still)and i will always be a visor fan. Remember, its the product, not the ceo!. Thanks for all the information on the board, without it, half of the things i do now would'nt be possible!


p.s. endora mail works perfectly for checking pop mail on the digital link!

The E&B phone case is the best protection but it is slightly small for the Sprint phone and I had to make some cuts as the lights are not in the same place.

Digital Link Success

I have had the Sprint DL for nearly two weeks now, and couldn't be much happier. The Sprint store had it operational almost immediately, and I was on the wireless web almost immediately. Frankly, the web is presently too slow to be much use, but I got it for the e-mail, and that is great. When out of the office, I forward my e-mail to my sprint e-mail account (comes with wireless web service). I then have the account set to send a message to my phone that I have e-mail. It rings me, and gives me the to/from line and the subject line. I can then choose to access my mail using Eudora. (Still trying to figure out how to open attachments with Eudora . . .)

I live and work in the DC area, and have no connect problems, even out in the country 40 miles away. I am sure there are pockets of problems, just like any other service, but I am connected on my commute home to upper Montgomery county. I flew accross the country this weekend, and was connected at all airports, including smaller ones like Pasco and Walla Walla in Washington. I could connect on the hour-long country drive between Walla Walla and Pasco.

All in all, I am pretty pleased. I'm adding the Thumboard, and think I have a less expensive, more celluarly reliable Treo before its time. There is a new users group on Yahoo for the Digital Link that is helpful to any new or potential users.

I've been with Sprint PCS for years now (Motorola Startac) - and have had this problem on all the phones I've had. I think it's a network problem, not a problem with your phone. I think inherent to PCS is that the signal strength is lower (that's why battery life is longer) and therefore you have a tendency to "drop out" of the system.

Another theory is that the relay antennaes are limited by how many people they can carry at one time, and they have to make decisions on who to drop all the time. So while signal strength still looks strong - you may not be able to receive a call until someone else hangs up. I've noticed this MOST when at a sporting event or business convention.

Thumbs up So far so good

Had the Sprint DL for 5 weeks so far, and I like it. It rides in my trusty Handspring DL.
** Integration with address book is the big feature; I have wanted this for years since I gave up my old Newton that had a tone dialer integrated with its speaker. I especially love the part where when someone calls, the software translates the caller id into the name from the book.
** Considered waiting for Treo but decided, after looking at the Samsung that Sprint sells, and studying the Treo pics on the web, that I wanted a bigger screen. I have to wear glasses to read now, and anything that makes my "phone" more readable, such as bigger letters, is a good thing and worth the weight tradeoff.
** I might buy a Prism to get a better screen; color would improve readability, and the cradle recharge would be nice.
** Weight/size is a problem; Don't put the Visor DL+Sprint DL in a shirt pocket unless your top button is sewn on tightly! I use the plastic holster/clip from Handspring and clip it to my pants pocket. Access is fast but it does have an industrial design look.
** Blazer 2.0 browser is OK but with the slow PCS speed (14.4k?) one must choose sites carefully. Few web sites that I like from Explorer seem to be handheld-friendly ("friendly" as in minimal pics, limited text). A good starting portal is www.pawgo.com since it has links to handheld-friendly sites. I wonder what Sprint will charge for 3G? Mapquest would be a killer app if the browse speed were faster.
** Battery life on the Sprint DL is much better than my old Nokia; I went over a week on the last charge but didn't call very much. I suspect that the unit does not auto-off the Visor correctly though, since my last set of AAAs didn't last very long.
** The included earpiece is OK but lacks a button to answer the phone, so it isn't very useful while driving. I would still have to fumble for the Visor which makes it dangerous and unacceptable as a car phone.

On the whole a good package but with some limitations that you should know about.
