OK, call me stupid, but how does the backlight work. I can't seem to figure it out, or maybe it's busted.

Just press and hold the On button to toggle the backlight off and on.

you can hold down the power button until the light turns on. you can't see it very well in a bright room, though. you can definitely see it on in the dark. and to turn it off, you can hold down the power button again.
