Unhappy

I guess this is more of a statement than a request for help, as it appears just to be crappy software...

I'm using the Palm Desktop on two seperate G4/350s running OS9. On BOTH machines, I can usually only get one hotsync before the "Serial Monitor" decides to "Unexpectedly Quit" requiring a full restart to sync again.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Has anyone found a fix?

Thanks.

I'm on a G4 with Mac OS 9 and had a hotsync problem as well... but not with palm desktop 2.1H... the problem was with version 2.5. To fix this I did the following (also gets avantgo to work as well)

Keep the Handsping versions of the Palm Desktop software and all other components...such as the Conduit Manager and Serial Port Monitor 2.1H

Download the palm desktop 2.5 software installer from www.palm.com and install it into a seperate folder elsewhere on your hard disk.

Take the newly installed HotSync Manager 2.5 and replced your old HotSync Manager 2.1H

Assuming you're using version 2.5, this should help.

You can still use palm desktop software 2.5, just not the hot-synch related files that come with 2.5.

Assuming you're using version 2.5, this should help.

Thanks!

I'll try that now.

Just so I am clear...I should/can use desktop 2.5, and the Hotsync Manager 2.5, but none of the other 2.5 hotsync support files?

Well, I installed 2.5, moved all of the older hotsync files (except hotsync manager) to the new Palm folder.

Now, EVERYTIME I sync, it installs Palm OS 3.1.1. I then can not do another Hotsync until I restart the Mac. Then, it does the same thing...only installes 3.1.1

Help...I'm stuck in a nasty loop!

I took the time to get rid of everything...2.1, 2.5, all of the extensions, etc...

Reinstalled 2.5

Same thing...everytime I hotsync, it installs the 3.1.1 update and then refuses to hotsync again until I restart my Mac.

I think I'll try reinstalling 2.1 again. Thanks for the help riojas...is ANYONE else having these problems with OS 9?

homer, I am having the same problems. I chose 2.5 software because when I used 2.1 I got a bomb at startup-it was the instant palm desktop. I would have to restart with extensions off and delete instant palm desktop from startup. I tried swapping hot-synch managers like the above posts said, but that didn't work. The Visor was unable to connect to the iMac at all. So now I'm back to version 2.5 and getting only one hotsynch per startup. I've just made a habit of shutting down my computer every night.

Well, I called tech support. Their answer was to re-install Palm Desktop 2.1H and not use the updated 2.5

Seeing as how this problem is happening to me on two different machines, i don't think that is the solution.

So, it sounds like us Mac OS9 users either have to accept the fact that the serial port monitor will crash on the first hotsync with 2.1h, or, live with just one hotsync per session with 2.5

What a load of crap.

I'll be calling them again this week. This is unexcusable.

Same problem here. I called Handspring and found out that there's an issue with OS 9.x.

The current "fix" is to delete the entire "Backups" folder in your Users folder of the Palm folder.

Then you can sync. It does take awhile because the Visor backsup it's ENTIRE contents again. I haven't tried setting the backup conduit setting to "do nothing" yet.

Michael.
