I have a question... I installed OmniRemote, and I cannot seem to get that to work... I am wondering if my IR even works... Does anyone know of any program to test this?

Mark,
Not aware of any program but I'll ask a stupid question, you have enabled beam receive on under the "Preferences, General" general area correct? Mine came with this feature turned off. Just a thought!

Still waiting for my Visor...but thought I may be able to help. Did you install the Visor version of Omniremote? And don't forget that darn infrared transceiver on the Visor is on the side...

You'll get a link to the url for OmniRemote from the software link on main page of VisorCentral - expires on Dec 1st though as its a Beta.

On initial tests I found the IR port very weak though for proper use around the home.

Good luck!

I transferred databases and apps from a Palm III to the Visor with no problem. One interesting thing I found was if the two devices are really close (1 inch) the transfer would not work. I had to move them about 6 inches apart for the infrared to work.

One of the things you need to keep in mind with an IR device is just how the IR port works.

It doesn't send a tightly focused beam out like a laser because then you'd have the be incredibly precise with the positioning of the two devices. It emits the signal more like a cone, and the properties of the cone are fairly dependant upon how much power it's using. (The less power used, the weaker the beam, & thus the tighter the focus).

Inside a certain range, the IR signal may still be too tightly focused to be properly detected by the other device.

The average laptop IR port has about a 2:1 ratio (every 2 units of measurement away from the port, the signal is approx 1 unit of measurement wide). I'd imagine the port on the Visor & Palms are much lower powered and probably have more like a 4:1 or 5:1 ratio.

For the best reception you want the signal to 'cover' the whole IR port on the recieving end, so if the target IR port is about 1" at it's largest dimension, you'll want the Visor to be at least approx. 4-5 inches away from it's target

Question

On a related issue: Has anyone successfully Hot-Synced via the IR port with a powerbook (or laptop)? I'd be trying, but I remain visorless.

Yes, there are about 200 lucky beta testers of IrLink for Visor can do IR HotSync. Few of them tested link Visor to cellular phone via IR.

Still in QA, the soon to be released version, but if you like to try it now, drop a email to [email protected] for the beta version.

John:

I'm one of those lucky beta testers...I'd be happy to send you a bug report, but I haven't run across any yet. I'm making IRLink jump through hoops; I've synced to the desktop, and yahoo calendar, avantgo, all at the same time, and it works. (of course, doing all that at once is sloooowwww....)

Same here, The IRLink beta is great, I've had no problems with it at all. I've mainly been using it to keep my Avantgo stuff up to date when I'm using my laptop, I've had no problems with it at all so far.
A big pat on the back to everyone at IS/Complete.
