well, I'm an idiot, but a darn fast one.

3rd day with my first car and I go get me a 173$can speeding ticket. the fuzz was camped out at the bottom of a hill radaring every wave of traffic.

I deserved it though> was going 88 in a 50 zone. nevertheless, I really cant afford that ticket. luckily i get pad on friday, but i dont know if my part time paycheque is even going to cover that.
I'm thinking of disputing it. I have a lot more time than money.

I have to say this - HAHA! But if the exchange rate is still roughly 2 to 1, that is a cheap ticket...

Ok Ok - First off, you were dumb - atleast in nebraska, if you are going 20 mph over or less, you can attend a class and have the ticket stricken from the record (the class is $98 though)

Second - Go to court, and ask for Court Supervision. This is basically 90 days car probation, where you can't get in any more trouble...afterwards, the ticket is stricken from the record (but you still have to pay...) I don't know if you can do this in Canada, though.

My one and only (so far) ticket was for going 72 in a 60 - luckily, the ticket was $98 so I didn't have to pay any more for the class - which was supposed to be 4 hours but was cut to one and a half because of a snowstorm). The great thing about this is that the insurance company WILL NOT FIND OUT!

Let this be a lesson Ernie

The last time I got bagged for traveling more than 35MPH over the speed limit I got cuffed, stuffed and taken to jail. Wasn't that fun. Let me quote Jimmy Buffett "You do not want to go to jail."

If I had known between the age of 15 and 21 that my quest for speed would doom me to being able to only afford insurance (at $200 a month) on a Ford Escort (Red/GT) until I was 25 I think I would have let up a bit.

So let this be a lesson to you Ernie. If you speed when you are young you could get killed. Or worse, you could end up trying to pick up chicks during your college years and beyond in a cheeseball econo-grade upchuck wagon.

okay, so we have none of stuff here. Yes, it was a pretty cheap ticket, but I'm poorer than the ticket is cheap.

I work as an adaptive technician in a rehabilitation facility with about 300 clients with brain injuries, physical disabilities, etc.

Right now, about 85 of my active clients and nearly 100 past clients are here in specialized wheelchairs or other devices because of injuries from driving. Most were two or more of the following:
- young/inexperienced drivers
- not wearing seat belts
- speeding
- drinking

The terrible tragedy of these young people makes me pretty insensitive to young people who complain when they are busted for speeding, drinking, or not wearing seat belts (even as passengers).

Your ticket is absolutely insignificant against the need for a $26,000 powered wheelchair, $350 to $1000/day special care, multi-million dollar lawsuits by the other injured people, and untold millions of dollars in anguish, suffering, lost chunks of lives, etc. that can result in a heartbeat. Only part of this cost is carried by insurance, no matter how good the coverage is.

You sped and got a ticket. Fall to your knees and thank God that this is all that happened.

Madkins: good post. thanks.

Thorin: if you're guilty (which you obviously are), why dispute it? pay the damn thing and make it your first step towards responsiblity. make your second step slowing the hell down.

as someone who has had a friend killed by someone being irresponsible in a car i'll agree with half your statement. yeah, you're an idiot. but you ain't fast. you're slow.

why dispute it? because here where i live, word on the street is that it's worth it to dispute tickets. It's just a thought though, only because of my financial circumstances

I know i done broke da law an got caught. And I too hate it when people whine about stuff like this like it wasn't their fault. My first thought was, "well, I'm just going to go down and pay the ticket tomorrow". My second thought was: "oh wait, i only have 6 dollars in my account. oh well, i'm getting paid on friday".

my final thought was "oh crap, i dont know if i'm even going to get 173 dollars in my paycheque"

Again, I know i should pay it. I want to pay it. I would feel better if I could just go downtown tomorrow and be done with it, lesson learned.

slow? well, granted 88kph is not nearly as fast as 88mph, but still.

(yes, i know you're trying to say i'm stupid slow. i'm not that slow. wait. is this a recursive argument?)

so anyways, what have learned today kids?

speeding=bad
thorin=poor
kittens=fuzzy

And in the end, isn't that what really matters?

As an older "experienced" driver I have to speak out a bit.
I agree that it's tragic that so many young people in our country maim themselves in our country at the wheel. Speeding is the least of the problems. Lack of experience and underage drinking seem to be the biggest problem around here. Parents need to take note, it's your responsibility to insure your kids are prepared to handle the responsibility of driving.
I like to drive fast, but I don't drive irresponsibly (I know my limits and am very careful to pay attention to the weather and road conditions. I'm 39 years old and have never had a speed related accident (actually I've only had one car accident when I was 20- fell asleep at the wheel and flipped my jeep on a highway going 55). I have never hit a deer or other animal (and not many people in Upstate NY can say that!).
Most highways rated for 55/65 mph are safely driven at up to 90 mph- by attentive, experienced drivers.
More accidents occur at or below the posted speed limits. The vast majority are preventable. Driver education in this country is pitiful. The things people believe are acceptable to do while driving are amazing. I don't want to single out cell phone users 'cause I regularly see people shave, read, argue, put on makeup, brush their teeth, and comb their hair, dogs in their laps, etc. - a lot of people are doing everything but what they should be doing, which is driving.
It does scare me though when someone in a PT Cruiser or a minivan (not particularly good choices for high speed travel) pass me by when I'm driving 65-75 mph.

People need to follow some simple rules.

Don't go faster than you, or your vehicle, can handle.
Stay out of the left lane unless you're passing traffic.
Don't pass on the right.
Pay attention to what is happening all around you, not just the car right in front of you.
Look in your rear view mirrors once every 5 seconds, at least.
It's easier to merge into freeway traffic if you are going the minimum speed for that road when you exit the on ramp.
Keep both hands on the wheel unless you're shifting, etc. - it's easier to respond to surprises when you do that.
Don't rest your right hand on your shifter or lay it over the back of a seat. (see above)
Slow down in inclement weather - even if you have front wheel drive, 4wd, or all wheel drive (traction control, etc.) you can still slide out of control.
Don't get competitive with other drivers - The parents or kids you kill may not be yours.
Don't drive when your not 100%, tired drivers are just as bad as stoned or drunk drivers.
If you miss your exit don't try to make it, go to the next one, your exit will still be there when you get there.
Check your tire pressure regularly.
Don't cut in front of tractor trailers.
WEAR YOUR SEATBELT- NONE OF THE OTHER SAFETY SYSTEMS CAN PROTECT YOU WITHOUT YOU TAKING THAT STEP!!!!
And finally don't let your monkey out of it's cage while you're in transit.

I wear a seatbelt. always. always always always.

but it was funny. when I was in indiana last year NOBODY wore seatbelts. but they all drove huge oldsmobiles and caddilacs because "It's safer".

Well I too am a more experienced driver but not quite as much as you but on the otherhand with the advances in Auto Technology I think these 2 could be eliminated from your list. I do understand some of the rationale on the first of these but the sesond has never really made much sense to me - maybe its a mirror thing (i.e. Objects in mirror are closer than they appear.)

Partially, but the two are related. It's about following a clearly defined set of rules. If everyone knows what they're supposed to do and does it, it makes it safer for everyone. Passing on the right is a bad idea in general because you don't know if/when that car is going to try and get back into the right lane.

I've had people on my left decide to get into the right lane while I'm just tooling along minding my own business over in the rightmost lane. I wasn't trying to pass them, but they weren't bothering to check to see if they were passing someone either.
Basically the only time you're safe to pass on the right is if you're going around someone turning left -- and certainly not while on the highway.

Also stops "idjits" from weaving through traffic, never a pretty sight.

In Europe, overtaking on the right is illegal AND enforced. What I understand in the US it is not allawed but it is not enforced..

If everybody keeps the right lane except for overtaking, there is no reason/opportunity to overtake on the right.

This is how it is done in Europe and it works pretty good, once you've driven on a german autobahn you'll know why... no enforced speed limit but hardly any accidents since everybody keeps right...
Driving in the US is a nightmare for me since people 'park' in the fastlane an 10 Miles below the speed limit... this makes people (including me) overtake on the right which is more dangerous than on the left..

BobbyMike's list is pretty accurate. He only forgot:
-dont drive when you are tired. This is just as dangerous as drink driving..

That's a risky assumption if driving in the US. It's a pretty large area with a pretty diverse mix of law enforcement agencies. It would be more accurate to say 'not _uniformly_ enforced'. I know of quite a few people who received tickets for exactly that (usually with reckless endangerment tacked on if they were weaving in and out of lanes of traffic).

*shrug* Driving in the US is a mixed bag for me. Some places, people drive correctly; others, they don't. I find sugarcane season much more trying on one of the roads I have to travel on the way to work (only two lanes and very few straight stretches which allow for passing, but I guess that's what happens when the road follows the natural course of a bayou).

You will.

I'm 36 & have always kept my eye out for those tan buggers, but I just bagged my first a couple of months ago. Fortunately I was paying attention and only hit it doing about 10 mph. Didn't do anything to my truck, but it broke the deers leg. So I called the sheriff to make sure the deer got put down.

My father didn't hit his first deer until he was in his 50's. Same thing with a number of other people that I know. So if you live Upstate NY & haven't yet hit a deer, it's by sheer luck, not skill.

Did too mention it!
"Don't drive when your not 100%, tired drivers are just as bad as stoned or drunk drivers. "

"So if you live Upstate NY & haven't yet hit a deer, it's by sheer luck, not skill."

I postulate it has been skill as I have successfully avoided the tan little buggers as they have leapt out in front of me. I have been 'surprised' by a few (leaping out of underbrush, etc.) and have managed to zig around the furry little roadblocks. I'm not a cocky driver though and I know the roads I drive on very well. I also know that at some time I might get whacked by one leaping out as I pass by it, I'm fine with that as long as I know that I have been paying attention and have done all I can to avoid the accident.

And don't try to jinx me!
