My PowerBook G3 w/ my IR port works great with both IRLink and IBM's IR Software. On Mac, we have none of the reg. problems that our PC buddies have to deal with. And, if your runing at least 9.0, all the software you need is already installed. Viva la Mac!

Hey klaw...

Did you ever get your 600e with NT 4.0 IR syncing? I'm getting a new laptop at work--a 600e, also with NT. I've been syncing just fine via serial cable with my old Thinkpad 760el/Win95, and am dreading the move to a new machine and NT. Suggestions?

You'll probably need to download an NT IR driver from the IBM website. I did have to for my IBM 770. Only problem, you can only use serial OR IR at any particular time. Switching requires a reboot.

Can anyone explain how I can IR synch to my Compaq Armada running NT4.0? What software and versions do I need?

I have a serial cradle at the office but would rather keep it there than lugging it around with me wherever I take the laptop. I don't want to screw up my serial synch though as it has been working well.

How to Setup IrLink ? (TOP)


On PC:

You need to install Infrared drive 2.0 from Microsoft if you have Win 95
Windows NT user, please refer to our IrLink v1.5 Online user guide (HTML format in a zipped file)
Go to control panel -> infrared -> options -> check the first check box and uncheck the rest two. The very first line should say "Enable infrared communication on..." and the second line should say "Providing application support on..." (remember this port).
On Pilot. IrLink -> menu -> Device Discovery. It should report back Type: Computer, Cat.: IrCOMM, Name: (your computer name).
If step 3 works, go back to your PC. Launch HotSync Manager. Right click on the HotSync icon in the task tray -> Setup -> Local -> set the port to the port you remember in step two. Speed to "As Fast As Possible"
On Palm/Visor Device :



For Visor users:

You will need SerIrCommLib.prc from 3Com IR enhanced driver.
DO NOT LOAD AMX.prc, IrLib.prc, and/or SerIrPnl.prc on your Visor. It will crash your device totally and you will need a hard reset to make it works again.
Use standard Palm software installation procedure to install IrLink.prc and SerIrCommLib.prc and LicenseMgr.prc.
Launch IrLink, enable the "Redirect Cradle" and select IrDA 1.0.
Tap on local and you should be able to perform IR HotSync.

Newbie question for cpk or anyone else who has a suggestion:

I've installed SerIrCommLib.prc, LicenseMgr.prc and IrLink15.prc from 3COM and iscomplete and it has installed fine. My catch now is getting the IR port on my laptop configured correctly. My computer is the same as yours, cpk, W95 on a Dell Latitude CPi.

My problem is twofold:

1. My infrared port provides application support on COM3 but under the "enable infrared selection on port" pulldown I can only choose COM1, even directly below this line it says "providing application support on COM4". When I use COM1 it conflicts with the serial cradle I've been using to hotsync. Is it configured properly if I'm setting the infrared to use COM1? Can I still sync with the cradle easily?

2. After setting Hotsync to run local thru COM4, I still cannot establish a connection when I try to connect thru IrLink using IrDA or HP SIR. Any suggestions?

I'm running a Dell Latitude with Win98, and have managed to get IR working, so I'll give you my settings so you can see if there is anything different you need to Win95.

_BIOS_
Computer is a Dell Latitude CPi A400XT
BIOS version is A08
Serial Port: COM1
IR Port: COM4
Infrared Mode: Slow IR (Does anyone know if Fast IR works, I didn't want to change any settings after I got IR working)

_Windows 98_
This is from memory:
Control Panel/Add New Hardware
Select hardware from list
Infrared devices
The ports shown should be the ones selected in the BIOS, use default ports
(Change if necassary, I suppose)
Finish

_Infrared Monitor_
Enable infrared comminucation
Leave everything else blank

After a re-boot IRDa should now work on you laptop.

In order to test if the laptop is sending IR signals I used IRMonitor on my VDx.

With good luck, and a trailing wind, everything should know work.

I HotSync via Infrared on my Mac with no problems. Downloaded the necessary files from PalmGear and installed as instructed. EXCEPT -- left out the file AMX.prc, as I kept getting the dreaded flashing splash page and was unable to reset. Have no problems now. I have a G3 PowerBook 266 running OS 9.0.4.

Annoying 'waiting for sender' messages.

Certain laptops running W98 do not listen to the Control Panel for Infrared port. There is an item there called 'Search for and provide status for devices in range'. This should be turned off on all IR equipped PCs to prevent the annoying message on your Visor. Unfortunately, Sony Vaios and a few other PCs leave the IR port in 'search' mode regardless. You just have to keep em out of rnage of your Visor and time the HotSync carefully to prevent the message from interrupting HotSync too. Thumbs up for IRLink - it rocks. I use it with a Siemens S35i on the web.
Anyone got the super cool PalmVNC softeware going yet? - see www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/. I am dying to see my Windows desktop pop up on my Visor from a distant login.

My NT laptop has a front and a back IR port. I disable the front one and use the back one for syncing.
