Hi folks:

Has anyone had any luck with getting connected to a Sympatico account on their Thinmodem?

I have manually set up Sympatico on my PC, but can't get it to work on my Visor!!

Are you using HSE? I don't think the modem springboards jive with Bell's DSL lines. Yardie might know about this.

I'm in BC on Telus (was Sympatico). I have the Handspring modem and it works excellent. Make sure your "Network" (in Preferences)settings are correct.

Dialup

You need to use Bell Dialup service to connect to the internet. Bell includes 10 hours of free dialup connection/month for all DSL accounts.

I have checked my Network settings several times...Sympatico requires that you specify DNS addresses, so I've checked and double-checked that I am using the correct DNS addresses for the dial-up number that I am using...the maddening thing is that I have manually set up Sympatico on my PC and it works fine...but with the same settings on the Thinmodem, the number dials, and then nothing happens...

Would trying to connect to a v.90 line with the Thinmodem be the cause of the problem? I realize that the Thinmodem is not v.90 yet, but can a non-v.90 modem connect to a v.90 line?

In the Network setting tap on "details"
There should be:
Connection type: PPP
idle timeout: 1 Minute
Query DNS: (checked)


IP Address: (checked) Automatic


Also with Sympatico make sure your using the "a1a..." (or whatever it is there) user Name and password.
In the Phone settings make sure all boxes are "UN"checked and of course the right phone number for Sympatico.

Still no luck.

Tried what you suggested and it won't connect. This is getting very frustrating...

No luck here either

I have had no luck connecting on Sympatico either. Goes through the motions as if it is going to connect then it cancels.

Same here...

I am using the exact settings that I have on my PC, yet it won't work on the Thinmodem...

I am looking into the "roaming" section of Sympatico's tech help in more detail and hopefully that will get me going.

I don't have HSE, so I can't really answer.

I am trying to connect to just a regular old phone jack in my apt. as a first step - then what I want to do is set up what Sympatico calls "roaming" dial-ups for when I travel. I've got the correct DNS addresses entered, the proper phone numbers - basically the exact same settings as what I have on my desktop (which works!!).

I've tried to connect to the 28.8 line rather than the v.90 line, in case Bell was doing something to stop non v.90 modems (like the Thinmodem in its current state) from tying up their v.90 lines. Still no dice.

I'm really getting at the end of my rope.

I've been in contact with the support at Card Access, and the first thing they suggested was to turn off Flow Control if you are using a Prism or Plat. Here is what they said to do:

3. Are you using a Platinum or Prism?
3a. If so, please do the following to turn Flow Control Off on a Platinum
or Prism.
A. Tap on the "Prefs" icon.
B. If it does not say "Connection" at the top of the screen, then tap on the
word that is there and select "Connection" from the list.
C. Select "Standard Modem", tap "Edit".
D. Tap on "Details", find "Flow Ctl".
E. Tap to the right of "Flow Ctl" and change "Automatic" to "Off".

I rushed home and tried this, but it makes no difference. So I've emailed them to tell them this, and am awaiting their reply - I gave them Sympatico's tech support site address, so we'll see what comes back.

I had the same problem when I got my ThinComm --- dial connection worked fine using my PC, but the Visor with the ThinComm using the very same phone jack, phone number and settings would not work. Finally put ATX1 in the dial string (ATX1 means ignore the dial tone and just dial the number straight out) and some additional commas in the phone number for delays and it worked. I am in St. Louis, not Canada so I have flow control set to auto, it might be different for you but give it a try. I think what was happening was the modem was not recognizing the dial tone even though it was there. Bob.

Don't know if you've had any luck yet, but I was able to connect last night - turns out the problem that I was having is that there was stuff in the Script... section that you get to from the Details... button on the Network Prefs.

I took out this stuff (I swear I don't know how it got there!!), and it connected.

Check that out if you're still having trouble.
