To my understanding, IrLink doesn't work with the Platinum becuase of the OS. Anyone know an alternate program?

Wink By 'link' what do u mean? what do u want to do?

I'm using platinum and nokia 7110, they connect perfectly with each other. I think it would be the same for 8290 (I assume it has IrDA). If u want to connect to the internet, jus set up an IR to modem if 8290 has modem, and use a dial up isp u should be okay. For phonebook, use GSMtool, for logos, ringtones, use MonkeyXXX(logo, ringtons, etc). I don't know what IrLink does, so i can't say that covers it, but thats how i use the ir to hook up my phone. I think there is a newer version of IrLink coming out, check out IrLink page =)

No the functionality of IRLink is built into the newer OS in the Platinum, you don't need it.

So what would I do to link my Platinum with a 8290? I found lots on the deluxe version, but almost nothing on the Platinum.

Lightbulb How to do it.

tchun:

Go into System: Prefs.

Click 'Connection' from the drop down menu.

Click 'New'.

Name the connection whatever you want (I used 'Celular'). Make Connection Method 'IrComm to Modem'

Make Dialing 'TouchTone'

Make Volume 'Low'

Click the Details Button: Here we may have differences but this is how I did it.

'Speed': 57,600 bps
'Flow Ctl': Automatic
'Init String': Leave Blank

Click OK.

Go into 'Network' off of Prefs and create a dial up account and that should do it.

Nokia 8290

I'm using the same setup as orion and it works perfectly.

Some things I learned when I first set this up...

1. Don't forget to activate the IR on your phone just before you are ready to connect or it will never work.

2. My cellular service provider requires the area code on all calls and I had failed to include area code in the number to be dialed.

3. Make sure you have data service activated on your phone (called Powertel DATA in my case) or you will not be able to connect.

Hope this helps!

I have followed the previous setup instructions (Visor Platinum & Nokia 8290). When I hit the 'Connect' button on the Visor, the 8290 starts dialing ('Calling 303xxxxxx'). After a few seconds it comes back and says 'Error in Connecting'.

Any ideas why it is not completing? I have asked the carrier (Voicestream) to enable my phone for 'data'. Is there anyway to verify this has been done?

TIA

Dave

Lightbulb

To enable data, they have to give you a data phone number. This is a second number in addition to your main number. Call and find out what it is. Call the number from another phone and if the 8290 rings, it is active. If it isn't active, wait awhile, or call and whine.

This is what Cingular did to hook up my 8290. They even told me to call the number so that I could tell when it had been activated.

After connecting to your ISP, you will see a "D" in the upper left corner of the phone's display. This is the only way to verify that VoiceStream has activated data service on your account without having to call customer care.

Exclamation VoiceStream does it different

bradhaak: Voicestream doesn't require a data number, I have the 8290 w/data service.

dewald: Make 100% sure they have you set up for data services. My account online and through customer service said I had data set up but I really didn't. I emailed there 'data group' (or whatever they're called) and they got back to me in a day or two and I was good to go.

Cell providers - data a normal service???

Orion / et. al :

Living in a small island country sometimes has disadvantages. I just found out that our new fancy digital service doesn't include data as an option. They said it's about a year away.

I'm just doing a poll, but are there any other rural providers that you know of that do not provide data service for their phones? I'm still in shock that only when I travel to the states will I be able to use my fancy new WAP phone (Nokia 7160). It is a good phone though...

Cheers,

--- Gavin

ob: At least I now know why IRlink and my Visor cannot make a connection to my ISP.
