Talking

Okay, so I'm definitely not the first to do this, but I thought I'd pass along what I learned in case anybody else is having trouble doing this.

Here's my configuration:

Serial Cradle -> db9-db25 adapter -> null modem -> 25-pin cable to ZOOM 56k modem

No special modified cradles or anything.

Modem settings:
Modem: Custom
Speed: 57,600
Speaker: Off (worked either way)
Flow Ctl: Off
Country: Other
String: AT&F&D0&A1&B1&H1&M4X4

Note: I got these modem settings from another post on this subject.

For the longest time I was getting a "Serial Port In Use" error, and I couldn't find any answers in any of these discussions. The solution is this... LEAVE THE VISOR OFF UNTIL IT IS IN THE CRADLE! Once you have turned on the modem and set the visor in the cradle, turn it on. Then everything should connect up just fine. Worked for me anyway.

Hope somebody finds this useful!

Unhappy

My problem here is, whenever I turn the Visor off (on the cradle of course...), the RD and SD signals on the modem turn on; whenever the Visor is on, those two signals turn off. and I just can't get this thing working...

I'm using a USR sportster 336 + a 9->25 adapter + a null modem adapter + a gender changer.

anyone can help me out here?

Just to clear things up, I still get the RD/SD lights when the Visor is in the cradle and turned off. But everything seems to work. What kind of problem are you having? My configuration is very similar.

my config on visor is:
Modem: Custom
Speed: 28800bps
Speaker: off
Flow Ctl: off
Country: Other
String: AT&F

and sometimes it says "serial port in use", sometimes, if I got lucky, it'll say "dialing xxx(isp)", and then after a while, "error: modem not found(0x1106)", meanwhile, I can actually see the signals on modem blink.
do I need to change any setting on the modem? TIA!

update:
I turned all the hacks off, and did many soft resets.

John,

I guess there's not much else that I know. Like I said in my first post, I consistently got "Serial Port In Use" if I had the Visor on when I set it in the serial cradle. I got around that by turning on the modem, setting the Visor in the cradle (with it off), and then turning it on. I never got a "modem not found", so I guess I can't help you there.

Anybody else?
