ThinModem+ USBFileMover seems to allow the download of everything on the visor, including the hidden stuff! Does this mean we can do complete backups by simply selecting everything on the list and copying it to a folder on our hard drives, a la BackUpBuddy? Or is there something else that I am missing (like i usually do).

I read that thread previously, thanks. I simply started a new thread because I am asking a general visor question, not helping kevin_i_orourke with his problem.

I use BB (BackupBuddy). It will compare the PDA files vs the backup of files on the PC. If you delete a file from the PDA BB will move the file from the PC backup folder to an archive folder. Thus a restore via BB will only put the current files back on to the PDA.

Does the USBFileMover do the maintenance on the PC for deleted files?

Reason I ask this, is I was previously using BackupAll and of course deleted PDA files did NOT get removed from the PC. You had to do that manually to keep both sides equal.

BB also has a number of other settings relative to backing up.

I have the same question/concern as the original poster; maybe reigniting the thread will get a solid answer.

USBFileMover is a very simple little .prc/.exe combo that lets you move .prc and .pdb files between the Visor and a folder on your computer. It doesn't do any maintenance on the files on either side.

The file maintenance isn't a real issue, though. I don't mind doing full backups every once in a while to different directories. If things get out of sync, just do another full one.

I'm curious if it truly is a good, reliable, 100% restore backup option. Can I hard reset my Visor, sync the USBFileMover.prc to it, then dump the entire directory of applications and databases back and have all the same information?

Is this the best freeware backup solution?

I played aroudn with it.. and failed. The problem is, is that you can copy files OFF the Visor, but I have not been able to copy files ON to the Visor. So If yo udo a hard reset, you haveto reinstall of of your files.. the hard way.

Lightbulb

What if you used the traditional Palm Desktop installer to add the files from the directory to the Visor?

I guess this is something I'm going to be playing with shortly. I'm getting a replacement Visor from Handspring and we'll see how easy it is to transfer from one to another.

USBFileMover (resolved)

I emailed Card Access about why you cannot upload .prc or .pdb files to the Visor with USBFileMover. I got their reply today. The verdict:

"The USB File Mover application will only function fully when the Thinmodem/ThinmodemPlus is inserted in the Visor Springboard slot."

I guess that's smart from their perspective. At least now we know what it takes.

well to miradu2000, I guess you wouldn't be using a TM+ in conjunction with the USBFileMover?

For me, I can copy on or off and delete the files for my Prism with TM+.

I hope you're not upset about a further tangent, but I had installed the freebie BackupBitster a long time ago. Quite unexpectedly, after a recent hard reset, I found that it was able to restore _everything_ and acted virtually identical to a restore from a backup module.
