Question

Since a lot of people are getting the new Prism or Platinum, my questions are:

How do you move your existing programs from your old Visor (Deluxe or Solo) to the new Prism or Platinum?

Do you have to beam over each program one by one? I don't think the backup module can help any. Or would the 8MB Flash Module help?

Lightbulb

Easier than that if you're using BackupBuddy or some other utility that insures all your data is backed up. Just put the new Visor in the cradle and hit the HotSync button. Then when it asks you for a user name, select the HotSync name you used on your old Visor. It will reinstall all your apps and data on the new Visor.

Then you want to be sure to hard-reset the old Visor and give it a different HotSync name. Two PDAs with the same HotSync name is bad mojo and can cause sync problems.

If you're not using BackupBuddy or something similar, the method above will still install all your data (phone numbers, appointments, etc.), but will likely leave most of your applications out.

Post Upgrading to the new Visors

Handspring has posted an answer to your question on their web site:

Current Palm Owners

Q. Can I upgrade from my current Palm device?
A. Yes. In fact, it's easy to upgrade:

* Perform a HotSync operation with your old device. This ensures that the latest information is on your desktop computer.
* Install the new desktop software contained on the CD-ROM. This updates the HotSync software to work with Visor.
* Place your new Visor handheld in the cradle and press the HotSync button. If the Select User Dialog appears, select your username.

If any third party applications do not get installed onto your Visor, you can beam them from your Palm device or reinstall them from the original PC files. Note that you can keep your Palm cradle and synchronize to the same PC as you synchronize your Visor. In order to keep your computer from confusing your two devices, however, you must hard reset the Palm device (see your Palm manual for details).

Additionally, if you plan on keeping both machines, you may want to check out PalmName 3.0 to properly change your HotSync name.

Question Backup Module?

Since they are all 8mb, can't the Backup Module be used? (I've done this from one Deluxe to another.)

I agree, I would think that as long as you defined your new Visor as the same username, you could just pop in the Backup SB and hit restore...

Then hard reset the old device and post it on E-Bay.

Is my logic flawed?

Question

Hmm.. sounds like BackupBuddy might work. I thought the Backup Module copies everything including the Palm OS. So let's say if I pop in my Backup Module from old Visor Deluxe into a new Visor Platinum or Prism, it will overwrite the new Palm OS and I'll have Palm OS 3.0 instead of Palm OS 3.5. Is this correct?

Yep, the Backup module should work fine.

I was only suggesting BackupBuddy in case someone didn't own the module...

Untrue. The OS in Visors can't be overwritten. However, if you've used Handspring Updater to install OS 3.1H3, be careful.

Thumbs up

For what it's worth, I just received two seperate confirmations from Customer Support as I was going about ordering my Platinum...both affirmed(and I asked several times) that the Backup Springboard CAN be used with the simple restore command. The OS will NOT be overwritten. I'll let you know in a day or two

In any case, it does have a 30day return...

Backup Module & Solo?

Hmmm... I didn't even think about the Visor Solo (2mb). Will the backup module work in this case? 8mb to 8mb is fine, but what about 2mb to 8mb???
