I've used my Stowaway with the Thinmodem and Xircom landline modems right from the start. And, not to let the cat out of the bag, I've been successful using it with the Digital Link as well.

Communications modules don't take over the serial port (the Springboard slot is an extension of the CPU bus), they provide their own.

I'm really thinking about getting this device. Please update if the Digital Link has the voice activation feature as well as the card calling function like adding the sequence of placing a call with Sprint phone card.

voice activation

Well I have the SB3000 and yes it does have the Sprint Voice dialing. But here is the silly thing. You have to dial *2 Talk and then say the name you want to call. I set it up as a speed number but it still is kinda a pain to have to hit a button. My old Samsung 8500 headset All I had to do was push the on switch and say the name and it dialed.

Per their web site it is free for 3 months then $5/month. Can anyone answer my question about if they supply an ISP #? My VP service is up soon and I need to decide, cheap cell phone or integrated SBphone.

SprintPCS provides QNC (Quick Network Connect). This is an ISP connection through their network. It's most notable drawback is the lack of SMTP mail services. Since most ISP's block "relaying" of mail, unless you can authenicate your SMTP server (Eudora Mail provides this function), sending mail is impossible. You can also dial any traditional ISP as well.

My Roadrunner cable doesnt supply a dialup # and my AOL bring your own access surcharges dialup. so thats why its important Sprint provide access. So can you use this QNC with Avantgo or Blazer (supplied I think)?

What you had on the Samsung 8500 was that the numbers are stored locally on your phone. I don't have Sprint voice dialing on my plan but I still use that feature with my Samsung 8500.

Sprint voice dialing requires you to connect to the network before it can voice dial, therefore you have to press *2 Talk. The difference between the two is that you can have upto 2500 numbers stored using the Sprint feature whereas the Samsung can store only 20 or so.

So your SB3000 is working correctly. It just does not have the feature that the Samsung has of storing a voice-dialled number locally on the device.

Yes, the QNC is an ISP connection to the internet. You can use it with any TCP/IP-aware application for the Visor. I've used both AvantGo and Blazer (v1.1 is on the CD that came with my demo unit; it's not installed on the module), along with Eudora Web for web access. I've also used Eudora Mail, MultiMail, and iambic Mail (though I could only send with Eudora through my Yahoo account).

I was dealing with a tech support person at AirPrime (developer of the SB3000) on some other issues and he gave me the following clarification about QNC:

QNC is not the ISP... Sprint PCS is when using their network. It's simply a technology (developed by Qualcomm) that enables a quick connection to the Sprint PCS data line, usually within 10 seconds. In contrast, when you dial a 3rd-party ISP (or any other data-type call), you're using the normal circuit connect technology, which can take up to 50-60 seconds, much like a dial-up modem. QNC is really just what it stands for: a Quick Network Connect.

Also, the QNC phone number, #2932, stands for Number to Web, spelled out on your phone's keypad.

Yup.

Mark is correct. This nice QNC feature will also help with the new upcomming 3G. Where as if you dial a normal ISP you will be limited to the 14.4.

Hey buy the way do you know of any good cases for the Visor/SB3000 combo. I tried the Vaja case for the Visorphone but sent it back. It looked goofy and it came with a belt clip which I do not want.

I have been looking at the EB Slipper for the VisorPhone but I am wondering if it will fit?

I'm trying out the belt-clip case Handspring sells for their Visor/VisorPhone combo - it fits but the clear window doesn't make alot of sense. I'm not sure if I like it or not...yet.

On another topic, does anyone understand Sprint's Wireless Web? Some places it says that it's free, except that it uses your minutes and other places it says it costs $10/month and there are at least 3 different web "services?" that I'm not sure - anyway I don't understand it and can't figure out what I need to do - DON'T want to pay 35�/minute either...

As far as pricing for you wireless webwith Sprint it depends on the plan you have. The one I have is $49 a month and my web minutes are used from my voice minutes. If your plan doesn't have wireless web you can add it for $10 a month so when you are wireless web it will take from your voice minutes.

If you do not have wireless web in your plan at all you can still use it but is cost $0.35 per minute.

(Hope you understand alltheat it's kinda jumbled)

Now for e-mail program I use MultiMail. It works really well. However if someone sends you e-mail with pictures in the mail (Not attached) that stuff shows up as garbage text. I do not know of any e-mail program for the PalmOS that can handle pics in the mail though. So I think MultiMail is the best.

does the $10 let me do all of those things, without extra cost (other than the $10 AND mintues used?)

Does MultiMail let you access more than one email account? or do I have to settle for one on my Visor?

The 10$/m covers your connection to their network with your plan minutes, thus browsing, using their WAP based email, and using the phone to link another device (PDA/Laptop/etc.) to the net is covered. I'm not sure how it is now, for adding wireless web, but when I signed up I was given 50 updates a month free, and they charge me for each one over 50, or I can buy an add-on package that gives me more per month. (But then I also only pay 5$/m for it) Updates are like pages sent over the net, such as you can setup with Yahoo to send you stock quotes on a schedule to your phone; each sent message counts as an update.

I'm not sure about this, but I seem to remember their Short Mail service using those same updates (might be wrong about that, though). I never use Short Mail, though, since I only know one other person with Sprint service, and since we live 1500 miles apart, there isn't a whole lot of use for the Short Mail function with her... always seemed like an 'on the go' coordination thing to me.

Actually, wireless web now costs only $5/month, with the first three months free when you sign up. It includes all wireless access, including WAP on the phone and wireless connection to handheld or laptop. It also includes 50 "wireless web messages," which I believe is akin to SMS, through which you can receive updates from Yahoo and other sources. Essentially, you can send short (100 character) messages to <your number>@messaging.sprintpcs.com, and it will end up on your phone. You can buy an additional 30 messages for $2, or I think 200 for $10. I know all this cause I recently signed up .

On a tangential note: However, wireless web messaging hasn't worked for me in weeks. Nothing sent to the e-mail address goes through, and I can't log onto the web messaging area of their web site. Has anyone else had this problem? I really need to call customer service, but I haven't had the stomach for it. IMHO Sprint customer service, or lack thereof, is the major drawback to their service (here in New York City at least).

That is my one issues with Sprint. The one person I mentioned knowing that used Sprint used to work at one of their call centers in TX... I miss that, since help/answers were just an instant message away, now I have to screw around with their POS support system, and then when I do get a human, they usually can't quite follow the nature of the problem I'm having (there are the few rare exceptions, and what gems those few are).

Well there is the other issue of trying to keep a signal inside of a Wal-Mart, but that's probably not Sprint's fault.

Question Strange behavior in cradle

I just received my SB3000 on Wednesday and I've noticed very strange bahavior with my Prisim when it's in the cradle charging. When I put it in the cradle, the Prisim turns itself on! It will then do it's power down timeout and then turn back on some time later and seems to repeat this sequence for a while before giving up!

Has anyone else noticed this and know of any solution?

Also, is there any way to set sound options for when an SMS alert arrives? I've enabled the "Audible alert for new messages" setting, but the sound is nearly inaudible.

I'm in the process of reviewing the SB3000. I'm using it on a VDx and a VPL and have the same issue. I've been in contact with AirPrime (developer of the SB3000) and they confirmed to me this is a known issue, especially on the Prism when it's recharging. When I told them of the same thing happening on the VDx, they hadn't heard of it before but will look into it.

In addition, see if you have this problem: from the main launcher screen, tap open the category list and leave it open... does it close itself? I'm getting this behaior whenever using a pull-down list... I've also brought it to AirPrime's attention.

For the SMS alert sound, make sure it's enabled in Sound Preferences (it's the VM Alert option) in the Phone app. Also, in the SMS app, there's a setting for Audible alerts. I believe they both need to be enabled.

I've noticed that a few of the ring tones don't always ring properly. Sometimes they just make a chirp and other times they simply beep or buzz. There doesn't seem to be any regularity or pattern to this behavior.
