Question

My Visor Deluxe has rebooted my Win98 computer several times. It happens when a but the unit in the cradle. It does not happen all of the time. It does not seem to matter if the unit is on or off. Anyone have any ideas?

Unhappy

I have the identical problem with my Visor Deluxe - random (about 50% of the time) reboots as soon as I set the Visor into the (USB) cradle (using Win98). This is totally unacceptable, of course, so I've been watching here for others with this problem -- and hopefully a solution. Unless I find something posted here in the next couple of days, I'll call Visor support, but I'm not looking forward to the long distance charges. (If I get a reply, I'll post here.)

Like you, I have found that it doesn't matter if the unit is on or off, nor does running my finger along the contacts first help (thought it might be static electricity).

I'm using Win98 first ed. and haven't had a problem with this. Perhaps there's a static discharge occuring (there have been postings about similar things) and it's hitting the Univ. Serial Bus and making the computer mainboard reset? It might be motherboard manufacturer-related, or at least related to whoever designed the USB controller on the board? Just guesses, no proof.

Good luck!

Post Possible USB dock reboot fix.

Hi, all.
The reboot-when-docking is a static charge problem between the handheld and cradle. Prior to docking the palm device, touch the contacts on the cradle to kill the charge that's built up there. (you should feel it). You will then be able to dock the handheld with no problems.
I got my Visor this Christmas and was having a 90% reboot-when-docking on my USB dock. After tapping on the contacts prior to docking, this has dropped to 0% for over a week, so it's a fix in my book.
In theory you can tap a ground in the dock's case to handle this problem, but that is just too much for such a small problem that can be solved otherwise.

Anyway, I don't feel this is a dock problem, just static doing it to you.

Hope this helps!

tom

the static thing might address the problem but i'll share my experiences....

Last year i (when i bought my visor) i decided to upgrade my computer from Win95 to 98 and install a USB card on my computer to take advantage of the USB cradle/USB capability of win98.

Everything worked great for about 8 or 9 months until i decided to upgrade the video card and modem. I installed the new video card and the new USB modem and when i went to sync my visor. ZAP! my computer rebooted! i couldn't figure out what was happening, i tried hotsyncing againa and it worked fine. A third time, fine again. The fourth, ZAP! reboot.

I later found out that my chipset was too old and i could only support 1 USB device, even though the card had 2 USB ports, because of some addressing issues. So when i plugged my USB modem into the second port and then tried to hotsync, it forced my computer to reboot.

In the end, i exchanged my USB modem for a serial port modem (this is an external modem) and my visor cradle is the ONLY USB device i have hooked up to my old (yet runs like a tank!) computer.

i doubt this is the problem in any of your cases as few people have computers as old as mine (pentium 200 BEFORE the whole MMX thing) but i thought i'd put the story out there and it might help somebody.

VPL reboots Win98me

I, too, experience my VPL reboot my Win98ME almost everytime I put it in the cradle. My work around: remove the cable from the USB port, place the VPL in the cradle and re-connect the cable to the USB port. This procedure seems to fix the problem.
