Red face

Hello all:

In the Troubleshooting section of this web site, I was told that I could set my HotSync Manager so that the "Desktop would override PDA." I've looked for this in my Mac Palm software, and I just don't see it. Right now it seems that ANY change made directly in my PDA will override the data on the computer.

Case in point: Because I kept finding duplicate contacts and because it's certainly a lot quicker and easier to delete dupes on the computer than on the PDA, I did so. BUT after hot-syncing, some records didn't even have ANY addresses even though I could see them on the computer!!! Scrolling down makes no difference on the PDA.

So I thought to DELETE all the contacts in my Palm contacts database, and then hot-sync FROM the Visor to my Mac so that it would be 100% identical.

Guess what? Only the FIVE records that I'd made direct changes to in the Visor showed up. The rest were gone. (I had over 600 contacts, but don't worry--I'd made TWO backups on my Backup Module and the home Mac, so that's why I wasn't in the least worried.)

I cannot figure out WHY the Visor will NOT take the LATEST versions of ALL records. That was my understanding, so I'm very frustrated. I can NOT find the screen or preferences that will enable me to SPECIFY which end should "override" the other in hot-syncing.

So I performed a soft reset with a paperclip. So far I've been asked to reestablish the settings. In doing so, I've added Datebook+, which is VERY nice. I'd like to restore the data from my home Mac TO the Palm, BUT now I'm almost afraid to move ahead and lose all that data AGAIN. Additionally, if I use the Backup Module to restore, will it OVERRIDE the Datebook+ because it wasn't there before? Because it wasn't there before when I turned on the Visor for the first time, and I can see why people love that program.

I'd also like to learn how to do the following:

1) Strip away the icons/apps so that only the apps I need/like are there. (For instance, I do NOT need the EXPENSE, CITY TIME, and CALCULATOR programs/icons; the Calculator icon seems so superfluous because the Visor already has a Calculator button on the screen itself.

2) Is there a way to group my favorite apps into ONE folder? For instance, right now I have Datebook3 under "Unfiled."

3) I have NOT seen anything about how to print the contacts so that they can be printed out as mailing lists.

4) If you feel that the Visor's contacts database program leaves a bit to be desired, any software recommendations would be most appreciated. My CHIEF requirement is that there MUST be NO glitches in porting the contacts data over to the new program. I have NO interest in rekeying some 600 contacts again.

5) Incidentally, I keep finding that the contacts database keeps ADDING new categories as in the one on the right on the bottom of the data entry screen (comments area), so when I look at the ALL CONTACTS, I see that someone has "Personal, Personal" ("personal" being a category). It is sooo annoying. I've also noticed that on my Visor, the address categories are now Primary Address and Secondary Address, but on my computer, I'd set it up as Work and Home.

6) I saw somewhere on this site, I think, that there's a Visor-related book called I DIDN'T KNOW YOU COULD DO THAT. When is it coming out? If I have to wait until May (I think that was supposed to be the pub date), well, I'm going to have to look for a similar book (I don't know what's a good title out there, so any recommendations will be MOST appreciated) now.

As you can tell, I'm extremely frustrated with the inconsistency of hot-syncing; not being able to SEE the full records on my computer when I can see it on my own Visor. I'm based in New York, so if there's a Mac user who's VERY fluent in Palm OS, I'd truly appreciate an hour's tutorial so that I can really USE it immediately instead of trying to comprehend its weird quirks and giving up on it.

By the way, this web site was the CHIEF reason why I chose to buy a Visor. Please convince me that I haven't been duped.

Thanks.

I think someone else can answer your questions better than I can, but I'll do my best. I've never hotsynced my contacts with my mac before, but the option to have the computer override the palm is at: Open HotSync Manager (not the palm desktop software), click on HotSync on the menu, go to Conduit Settings. There you can change all of the settings, including having the computer override the palm.

Also to put your favorite programs in a seperate folder you can first make a new folder by tapping on the down arrow on the upper right hand of the screen, select edit categories, make a favorites folder (named whatever you want). Then tap the menu button and choose Category. You can file all your programs from there.

There is no way that I know of to delete icons without deleting the actual program.

Hope some of this helps
