After hearing that BellSouth and PacificBell were going to be providing the service plans for the VisorPhone, I wanted to initiate a survey to create a forum whereby people could let Handspring know what service plans they have with their current cell phones. I may be wrong, but I believe that there are people out there, like myself, who do not want to change providers.

With that, let the survey begin, and thanks for participating.

Alltell

I have Alltell and my phone uses TDMA instead of GSM. I wish that US cell phone providers would standardize on GSM like Europe has.

GSM

Since the VisorPhone allegedly uses the GSM standard, it's only going to work with GSM networks; of which PacificBell, BellSouth and VoiceStream are the biggest networks as far as I know.

To my knowledge Sprint and Verizon use CDMA. Since HandSpring has a CDMA license, they probably will release a CDMA-compatible springboard at some point in the future.

(I just hope a GSM 900/1800 version of the module will be released so that I can use it here in Europe as well)

GSM

Without wanting to start a GSM vs. CDMA war, at least GSM will allow you to switch networks while keeping your phone, and switch phones while keeping your subscription. With GSM all your subscription details are stored on a small smart card, the SIM module, which you can insert into any GSM compatible phone.

They are pricing this module out of the market...I've got Sprint PCS which my whole family is quite happy with and my Sanyo SCP 400 phone which is quite capable was only $100 (* rebate for two brought the price down).

Though I need a batman utility belt, I will not be buying the cell phone module because of the cost. Heck the new Micro-Motorolla is $399 and it is wayyyyy cool....

I agree with Mike. The phone is way too expensive, and doesn't do everything that it should do for the price. MY 70 dollar phone does almost as much as the Visor phone, and has the one feature that I need, vibration for when I'm in school.
Anyways, with the Visor phone I won't be able to use my Slipper case.

The issue for me isn't the provider but the pricing plan. I travel a lot so I need a nationwide one-rate plan that includes roaming and long-distance anywhere in the country. To my knowledge that means AT&T (which sucks) and Verizon (which I just switched to). Sprint has the pricing plan but doesn't have nationwide coverage. I don't know about Voicestream yet; I think their coverage is narrower than Sprint's.

I'd love to get the new Visorphone -- but apparently it won't include wireless web access or full e-mail access. (I'm still waiting for the MarkSpace cable to link up my VDX with my Motorala Startac.) So I guess I'll still carry around two devices for a little while longer, until I can get everything in one. I WANT IT ALL!!

I'm with Verizon. I really don't want to switch providers. I feel that Verizon offers the most for your money. I have the Single Rate calling plan. No long distance, no roaming, EVER! I love that freedom. I hope that Visor comes up with a phone compaitble with Verizon's network. Hopefully, dual band at least, if not Tri Mode like the Motorola StarTac 7868W. Great phone, if it only acted like my Visor! Grin.

Nextel for me

I guess I'm an outlier, but a combination of my situation and a good deal led me to use Nextel as a wireless provider. I make almost all long distance phone calls on it, and used to pay $80-100 for a land line. I signed up for the national business plan (long distance included), and the guy provided two deals for me, an additional 200 minutes anytime (for a total of 600 anytime minutes) and 1000 minutes a month for the weekend. All that for $70; when you factor in taxes (making it $80), I pay about 5 cents a minute. Can't beat that.

Plus, I just found out that I can get unlimited internet access for $5 a month. I don't even use up my phone minutes unless I connect like a cellular modem to my laptop/PDA (which I don't).

Downsides include a small screen, kind of hard to use T-9 text typing, and the fact that no connectivity kit exists for a Visor. However, I don't really see a need to get my Visor on the net anytime soon.

Sprint PCS

I use Sprint PCS up here in Boston, MA. I have a plan which lets me call from anywhere in the US to anywhere in the US with no extra fees, as long as I'm on Sprint's network. I'm not a frequent traveler, but Sprint's network covers pretty much everywhere I do travel - all along most of the Eastern seaboard, all over here in Metro Boston, back home in rural central Ohio, and along most of the major interstates. A big plus is that my college has a Sprint PCS tower right on campus, so I get crystal clear reception from all around campus and inside any building.

I use Verizon here. We have a family share plan and I'm very satisfied with their CDMA network. Great bang for buck, I get all of Indiana for no long distance charge! I can't see spending money on the VisorPhone though (not that I could--Verizon's network is CDMA not GSM)--too much money and for only $100 I got an AudioVox CDM-9000 and for about $140 I think, the other person on our family share plan got a really neat StarTac. $300 is out of my league here I'm afraid..

Believe it or not, I am waiting for the VisorPhone as my 1st cell phone. I hope to use Verizon.
