If I were buying a new Visor now, I'd definitely get the Platinum, although I was also hoping for a real metal case.

However, I don't feel much of a need to upgrade. If it had 16 Megs of RAM or something then I might be more tempted, but as it is it isn't different enough from my current Visor Deluxe for me to upgrade.

The Prism is way too much money for me even though I could just use my echo/amazon credits once they all show up and get it for free. I'm a huge PalmOS fan, but a $200 premium just for color is way too much. For that sort of money you could get a wince machine which might be harder to use and uglier, but it's also got more memory and a higher resolution screen.

I was looking forward to the Platinum also - UNTIL I saw that the screen is the same as the Deluxe, with the same backlight. The only thing I really didn't care for was the Deluxe's screen/backlight. I guess what I want is a white background with black text. (Sounds like I want "color", but OUCH on that Prism $$$!)

Why is the Prism power button on the other side? People were discrediting the picture in that Yahoo mag because of that, but I guess it stuck.

Unhappy Platinum Woes

I am also dissapointed in the Platinum. I was hoping for the metal case and possibly more RAM. At this time I don't see upgrading for the OS upgrade, which I feel HS will patch to the VDx soon, and more speed. In all a MAJOR disappointment!!!!

Nothing about the new products makes me feel the need to upgrade from by VDX. I'll save the money for a springboard (a good springboard, maybe the VisorPhone). I can still run all the apps I need to and play all the games I like, so there really isn't any point in replacing my VDX. Maybe next years announcements will bring me functionality that I don't already posses, so I will keep my trusty ol' Blue Visor around until then.

Is the screen really exactly the same as the VDx? It looks like a lighter shade of green/gold in some pictures (the ones with the pale grey silkscreen area).

The screen IS the same. The grafitti area may be a different tint, but the screen is the same. However the faster processer makes the screen look better because of the faster refresh rate. How much better I don't know, but apparently it is noticeable. That's as much as I know.

Actually the Platinum screen displays 4 bit greyscale compared to 2 bit greyscale on the Vdx. The 16 shades of grey are noticable.

A visor deluxe shows 4-bit grayscale as well, but only programs that work outside of the palm OS can use it (i.e. AvantGo, PeanutReader, FireViewer - that's why your screen goes black for a quick second when switching to these apps). The screen is the same, it's the OS that allows the 16 level grayscale within any app at any time. I'm talking about the capabilities of the hardware, not what the software allows you to do with it. The only hardware changed made from the VDX to the VPL was the processor. I just spoke with a Handspring tech support person to confirm this.

Hey does anyone know if the cases are interchangable from the deluxe to the platinum? I was thinking of buying a platinum and swapping the cases with my OVD and then selling the "platinum" to my stupid friend.

You're the devil! Yes, the cases are the same (from what I've read).

They put the power button on the other side because if they kept it where it was, they would have to make the case for the Prism larger.

Cool button

unless you already have a deluxe, the platinum is a great choice. only 50 bucks more, and you get 150% speed plus better OS (4 bit grayscale, etc). about the prism's power button, it's on the right side because the light tube runs along the left. leaving the button where it was would require the unit to be thicker. it's no big loss...

Question

Well my debate at this point whether or not to upgrade myself from a VDx to a Platinum and sell my VDx to a coworker still working on a Palm III.

I'll be returning my Prism tomorrow... color isn't a necessity at $450 (+40 - serial cradle(WinNT @ the office)). But the speed is nice. No, it's not lightning fast, but I noticed differences left and right. Graffiti recognition stunk unless I wrote with higher pressure and lower speed. And yes, I could already see (within ONE week) points where the paint was rubbing thin/glossy... not a deciding factor for me, really, but someone else might be interested (it's already been discussed in other threads).

If I sell my VDx for $200, then the upgrade to me is only (only?) $100... I like the built-in MenuHack of OS 3.5 though - very cool! I think I'll order the Platinum tonight (never know when their free shipping deal will end!). If it's not all that, then I really have no qualms about sending it back. But here's to hoping...

(Gee I wish the new ones were StrongARM powered!)
