Cool

When they have some good coupons again (Like the $50 off $200 they had during Christmas) I'll really seriously consider buying this! Right now though, its not enough incentive to replace my Rio 500.

Talking Special from Innogear

I got this from the Innogear website:

"MiniJam
MiniJam Special Offer!
Hottest MP3 player for your Visor, with 64mb only $199!
Youve always wanted one and theres never been a better time to get the hottest Springboard Module for your Handspring Visor the expandable InnoGear MiniJam MP3 player!

Buy the 32mb Minijam for $199* and well throw in an extra 32mb FREE! Thats a total of 64mb to store your favorite music, pictures, and e-books. Thats right, not only does Minijam let you quickly download and play skip free -- your favorite MP3 music, it even includes a photo album for your digital pictures and an e-book player so you can catch up on your reading!

Thats not all, the award-winning Minijam is the only expandable Visor MP3 player available. Not only do you get a full 64mb, enough to store about 1 full hour of digital music, you can plug in another 64mb -- a total of 128mb -- for about 2 hours of music, hundreds of pictures or thousands of pages of your coolest e-books. And with Minijams unique control panel, you get the only player to put all this power right at your fingertips. Theres nothing else like it!

So, buy now to get your expandable 32mb Minijam with free 32mb memory before this limited time offer disappears: (Offer expires March 15, 2001) *Well send you one 64MB MMC card so you still have one expansion slot free for future upgrades!"

Now that sounds like a great deal! The 64MB MMC card is regularly priced at $119.95. Maybe they're offering this because the Six-Pack has been cancelled.

Mike

Since when? Isn't this what everyone has been waiting for, the ability to put ebooks and pictures on the MMC cards? I don't see any software update listed on Innogear's site. Anyone see this feature yet?

Special from Innogear Cont.

Just to clarify things...

If you buy a 32MB MiniJam, they give you free 32MB....but you get only a 64MB MMC card.

If you buy the 64MB MiniJam, they will send you a free 32MB MMC card.

It's basically free 32MB when you buy the MiniJam now until 3/15/01. This is on the Innogear website.

Thumbs down Still isn't a SoundsGood

That ebook reader http://www.peanutpress.com and picture viewer http://www.albumtogo.com that they tout and include are freeware. It still takes 35 minutes to fill up 64MB of music which is the worst anywhere, seven times slower than my SoundsGood. The minijam sucks batteries like nobody's business and can't be used outside the Visor like the SoundsGood. Hope they come out with WMA format soon like they say for the SoundsGood to double the amount of music I can put on the audioplayer.

MiniJam hot deal!!

The sounds good is only good until you decide you want to add MORE storage to your MP3 Player -- I heard that 128mb MMC cards will be available anyday now -- when that happens the MiniJam will hold OVER 256MB!!!!!!! Can your Sounds good do that? That is why the Minijam is a way better deal!
They have the SpeedLoader to help with the download speed now...

Thumbs down Quick, where's the cluestick?

The last time I checked, a 64MB MMC card was nearly $200. Sure, you can add more memory, but at that price, you might as well get another SoundsGood module. Besides, spending half an hour just to load files just isn't an attractive way to spend time with a portable music player. And I personally don't really care for the form factor of the MiniJam compared to the SoundsGood.

But most, most importantly, by buying a MiniJam, you will be supporting VaporGear, which just cancelled the SixPak.

Check those prices again. Egghead.com has the 64MB module for $108 and Innogear has is it for $120. Memory prices are dropping fast. My jaw hit the floor yesterday when I discovered that I could get 256MB of PC133 memory for $120 from Crucial. But I digress. (Now off to order that 64MB module for my Geode. )

Unhappy I'd wait till the update the minijam's software

I've been waiting since I got my minijam in September for the "UPDATE" to put palm programs and data files on the MMC cards, use the minijam's LED's to blink for alarms, etc.. with the death of the SIX PACK, I am now starting to doubt I will ever see these features in the MiniJam. But the good news is you can also order the USB Speedloader now.. I would suggest getting it before you can't. As much as I love my minijam, until it ships completed as promised, I am hard pressed to recommend it to anyone else at this time.. It will be a great product once it's finished, it just isn't completed right now.

Maybe someone can enlighten me as to the importance of Innogear's Speedloader. Haven't CF writer's been around for a couple of years or so now? I seem to remember seeing them go for $40-$50 US.

Other than that, $199 for the 64Mb MiniJam is almost tempting....

Angry innogear sucks

I just got this deceptive email from innogear. Let me assure you as a minijam owner, there is absolutely no way to store anything but an mp3 file on a mmc with the minijam right now, and innogear shows no sign of progress making this happen.

The minijam uses MMC (Multi Media Card) not Compact flash or Smart media.

For starters, transferring mp3's is Slooooooow via the USB to the minijam.. and secondly, you can't use a 3rd party "off the shelf" MMC reader as Innogear uses a proprietary format, so YOU MUST BUY theirs.. If you could I would have bought a Zio (see: http://www.d-store.com/d-store/microtech/zio.htm ) a long time ago. I really don't understand why they just couldn't use a fat-12 file system like the rest of the known world.

My Rio 500 also does this. All MP3 players store MP3s in a proprietary format, most likely due to copyright protection. What is a rip off is that $40 price tag! Yeah, you may be saving $50 on the 64mb model but it looks like if you want to actually use all that memory productively you'll be buying the Speedloader, so in reality your saving $10.

If that's true, the funny thing is there are FAR MORE EFFICIENT, faster and cheaper ways to pirate music than using an MMC card!!! I really can't see a valid reason for a proprietary format, other than possibly copy protection or maybe perhaps speed of access (but I tend to doubt the reason for the proprietary data format is access speed).

The $40 is pretty reasonable actually as most other similar MMC readers/writers (i.e. the Zio) are in about the same price range.. but you are right, you really shouldn't need the Speedloader in the first place.. There probably is some kind of performance issues with accessing MMC data from within the Palm/OS, and since the SoundsGood unit presumably has some kind of flash ram as it's main storage, it's probably quicker. I don't have the specs on MMC vs Flash , but I'd bet the MMC is slower.

The reason they do it is copy protection, this way you can't go to a friends house and give him all the music on your card. I know on my Rio there are way around it though, and there are even programs that let you store files on the card and bring to a friend's house.

The thing with the $40 reader is that MiniJam already has an MMC writer built in, why should you have to buy another dodad to do this?

Gone fr/ Amazon

As of this morning, Amazon lists on the 32MB version (with a 32MB MMC) for 199. Innogear's site still lists the 64 MB version.

I would think a CD-R would be a faster, cheaper and more effective way to "share" mp3's.. MMC, SmartMedia or Compact Flash wouldn't even be on my top 100 list of media choices. But you are probably right...

Why get the Speedloader? Because the "built in one" is amazingly slow.. And I mean it's very, very, very slow to use the MJLoader program to transfer 64mb of mp3's, something on the order of a half and hour for 64mb of mp3's!! And YES, that's using the Visor in the USB cradle , it's painfully slow, as you can imagine, I don't often change all my mp3's all that frequently. Thankfully my Prism recharges in the cradle so the battery drain is minimal, when I had a VDX, it would make a noticeable dent in the power after spending 30 minutes transferring songs. Infact once my VDX turned itself off because the power got too low during an mp3's transfer session. Trust me, you REALLY WANT the SpeedLoader if you own the minijam...
