Note from AvantGo Support
This came from AvanGo support regarding the same problem.
Error 5486 means that our servers are not communicating properly. You are getting an error while trying to connect servers because you
were unable to connect in the time our servers allow.
There are two main reasons that this would happen:
1. You do not have a valid hostname entered.
On your desktop click on Start | Programs | AvantGo | AvantGo Connect. In the AvantGo Connect window, highlight the AvantGo Server and
click on the Remove button. Repeat if there is another server listed. Then click on the Add button and enter the following information:
Hostname: sync.avantgo.com
Port: 80
Username: (your username)
Click on Set Password. Enter your AvantGo password.
Make sure the "Connect to this server during device synchronization" and "Refresh all content at next sync" boxes are both checked.
Click OK.
Once these are entered, try syncing again.
2. If that doesn't work, you may be going through a proxy server that is preventing our content downloads.
I suggest you ask your administrator for the proxy host name or static IP address and the port number (if you do not know what they
are). Then you can manually configure the Proxy Settings in AvantGo Connect:
Click on Start | Programs | AvantGo | AvantGo Connect. Click on the Connection tab. Click Change. On the HTTP line, enter the
following:
Address: (your proxy server's address - do not enter the "http://" portion of the name)
Port : (your proxy server's port)
Uncheck the box that says Automatically detect settings. Click OK, and try the sync again.
If this does not resolve your problem, please send us a test connection that reflects these changes you have just made. On your
desktop click on Start | Programs | AvantGo | AvantGo Connect. Click on the Connection tab. Click on the "Autodetect now" button.
Click on the "Show Details" button. Copy and paste the COMPLETE message to this email and send it to us for troubleshooting.
3. Try changing the sync to port 443 by doing the following: on your desktop go to Start | Programs | AvantGo | AvantGo Connect. On the
servers tab highlight the AvantGo server and click on properties. Change the port to 443 and select OK and close. Then try the sync
again.
Please contact us if the problem persists.
