Has anyone read the article in ZDNet about the price of Palm products going down. Here is part of the article:

ZDNet
"Speaking of Palm, a senior exec told me the company believes it can reduce the cost of its flagship handheld product to $99 from its current $450 within two years. At that price, the question of how to widen access to technology becomes a moot issue. ..."
http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/n...2554129,00.html

Smaller.com
"Not only would it be great, it's probably necessary to face the increasing pressure from Handspring and, soon, from Sony."

I wonder how that would effect Visor prices?

All I can say is...I'll believe it when I see it.

Also, notice he said the price drop would be in two years. The Palm IIIc won't even be around in two years.

Without Jeff Hawkins, Palm's running around like a headless chicken spinning fanciful future scenarios to maintain their credibility. First they talk about using StrongARM processors, then adding voice activation, and now $99 wireless units? Hey, if they can pull the latter one off, more power to them, but like foo says, I'll believe it when I see it.

Given the fact that the Palm VII's sales have been lukewarm at 100,000 units over the last nine months, Palm needs to do something radical now like sell the unit for $99, in exchange for a to-be-determined service plan. It's worked for cell phones. Or they could do an MSN-style rebate: get a $400 rebate when you sign up for three years of unlimited service.

I'd be much more interested in a $100 Palm VII with $45 monthly access than the current pricing of the Palm VII (especially given it's 2MB memory).

With all this turmoil about upcoming wireless features--its good to know I have BVD with a SpringBoard port. Instead of being the poor PalmV user who has no way to get wireless without some tacky, cumbersome device on the bottom of their PalmV--we have a SpringBoard Slot. Times like these make me treasure the day I bought Handspring

Agreed... the Springboard should allow us to stretch the life of our hardware significantly longer than a Palm's. The only drawback might be OS-related since the Visor cannot be flash upgraded. Not an insurmountable drawback... more of an inconvenience.

Get more for your buck, w/out wonky springboards! Go TRG Pro and don't look back.

Cool

The least expensive Visor sells for $179 (not counting the Visor Solo for $149 w/o cradle). Given another year or so, it would not take Handspring much to drop this price to $99, offer a complete assortment of it's popular colors, and maybe even boost the memory from 2MB to 4MB! Yes, it sounds like a lot, but given the economy and the rate of growth of the tech industry, I've seen things like this happen before,... ;-) At that price, Handspring will have trouble keeping it's warehouses full!

And if they added a new color, HOT PINK, they'd sell like hotcakes to chicks, finally breaking the traditional stereotypical male PDA user,... ;-)
