Exclamation

Did anyone else get a cute little catalog from Handspring today? It's filled with every possible product to attach to your Visor even - gasp - the InnoGear SixPak Combo!

That's right, boys and girls, InnoGear is still taunting us with the promise of this great Springboard. One interesting thing...in the list of "features" it only mentions "Memory upgrade." It doesn't tout the originally promised 8 meg upgrade.

Well, it's great to see everything that's been developed for this platform presented in this way. I imagine that folks who don't follow this will be surprised about how much there is. So much for the "vaporware" charges that some like to level against the Springboards!

strange...you talk about the SixPak and then go on to disagree with the 'vapourware' comments people are making....

hmmmm....just an observation!

Wink

Come on guys, lighten up! The point of the post was to "hail" all the various Springboards out there and to point out the appearance of the ONE "vaporware" Springboard, the infamous Sixpack.

I bet you $20

I bet you $20 its not vaporware. So what, they pushed the realese date back....what company doesn't? Just wait a little while and it will come out soon enough. Maybe they ran into a problem, would you rather have them realese it now with a unfixable by software problem and force you to send it back to them for a fix, thats pretty annoying. So just sit down, calm down, and stop accusing it of being a vaporware product.

BrianX124 it is obvious that you have *just* joined the forums here and have not seen the posts related to the 6-pack. It is also obvious you have only been a visor owner (if you are an owner) for a very short time. Had you been around for a while you would know that the 6-pack was announced over a year ago and was initially supposed to be available at the beginning of the year. Vaporgear has announced release date after release date but has not yet released the product. They have changed their release date more often than I or anyone else could hope to remember.

Before you go standing up for someone or something make sure you know what you are standing for. In this case you have NO leg to stand on.

I've said it before, I'll say it again...

Slacker,
You obviously don't own anything made by InnoGear unless you have the GoType keyboard. I know, it says Landware on it, but it was co-developed with InnoGear. I have the MiniJam and it rocks! They are supposed to have the upgrade to allow storage of non music files on the mmc card by Jan.
I hope it's true. I could use an extra 16M of storage and still have 64M of music. Just because you're impatient, doesn't mean the company is a flop. I, too am waiting for the SixPack. I just hope it's not too expensive.

Back when it was announced, it was estimated to cost $200. I don't think that projection has changed.

Slacker' right. The SixPak was announced at InternetWorld in October of 1999, with a Q1 release projected. As March came to a close, Innogear shifted the release "date" to June, and not long afterwards, "Summer," then September. Right up into the end of September, Innogear told would-be customers that the SixPak would be shipping in two or three more weeks. Then in the middle of October Innogear informed us that the SixPak would be released in Q1 2001.

All of this is frustrating enough in and of itself, but Innogear's history with the MiniJam puts the SixPak delays in an even more discouraging context. One of the main features the MiniJam was supposed to include was voice recording -- which was nonchalantly dropped from the product description, after Innogear started taking preorders. One VC reader noticed that the voice recording feature was missing in the MiniJam's feature set on Innogear's website, and emailed the company to find out what happened. Innogear confirmed that the MiniJam would, indeed, not include voice recording.

See my "Conspiracy theory" post in this thread regarding Innogear's "accidental" dropping of voice recording from the product description of the SixPak on their FAQ page. When called on it, Innogear's alibi was, "we are completely rebuilding the web site, so possibly someting happened to the text data."

Voice recording depends on flash memory, which is one of the most affected parts in the industry-wide component shortage. So I think that Innogear was faced with three choices: raise the price of the SixPak, delay the SixPak until their (presumed) outstanding orders were fulfilled, or drop the feature altogether -- which is hard to do when your product's namesake is having six features. They've already changed the product description on their website for the "memory upgrade" feature from stating 8MB to not giving any amount of memory at all.

I could go on and on with more examples, but I'm sure you get the point. Needless to say, I'd be happy to take you up on that $20 bet.

Say what? Voice recording depends on a microphone and an A/D convertor. Voice messages can be saved to RAM, if necessary.

I suspect the rumored interference between the screen and the microphone wiring has more to do with it.

In an e-mail to those that have expressed interest on Innogear's web page they state that the price for the Six-Pack will be $199 when it comes out.

I still believe that it will come out, but my money is on the reduced memory upgrade. I too noticed that they changed the wording from 8MB upgrade to a memory upgrade, and in light of the flash memory "shortages" I think Innogear is hedging a bit.

This is not in defense of anyone but in the Handspring Developer's Newsletter I just received today, there's a blurb about the original Springboard spec containing an error regarding the microphone interface. Basically, it said the the pin-outs were reversed. It's therefore possible that this may have some impact on the modules that are supposed to be using the microphone. I know, it's a weak excuse but an excuse nevertheless
