I was told by GeoDiscovery that somefolks should get their units within the next few days... They were shipping out the first 500 units this week.

For the record, I haven't got mine yet..

Cool

I haven't received mine, but talked with customer service. Those people who pre-ordered on 18/19Dec00 were shipped from the company this week. Those who ordered on the 20th of Dec (i./e. ME) may get one of the 500 received at the company this Friday. I expect to see mine in the next ten working days.

Unhappy

Someone on the beta test site said they called customer support and he was informed that the first batch they received had some quality control problems and they had to be sent back. Next ship date is sometime early Feb.

Could this be why Amazon's status went suddenly to "Backordered"?

I'm actually happy to read this, I'd rather wait and get a "good" unit than get a "problem" now.. I've been waiting since I pre-ordered, so what's a few more weeks..

I called today, and according to Customer Support, my Geode (ordered 14th this month) will ship in the next 3-4 days. I also ordered the last day for the beta testing $40 discount.

OK, here is the scoop, hopefully this will clear up some of the rumors.

We have units from our first short production run this week. We will have hundreds of units by Monday, and ramping up from there. We should have enough units to cover all of the back orders by February 1st. Those that ordered first will have their units shipped out early next week.

Here is more detailed information of what has been going on.

Hardware: We are pleased with our manufacturer, our first short production run has helped us work out the processes needed for larger runs. The hardware design is great! We are extremely pleased with its great performance. We have several units in this week and should have hundreds by Monday, and ramping up from there.

Software: We are continuing integration testing and small changes to make sure that the software integrates well with the new hardware. We feel this will be wrapped up in time for first shipment early next week. We will keep you up to date on this.

We will also post GeoView Mobile 1.0 to the web early next week. This is a free download, you will also be able to download free detailed city maps of over 110 US cities, and that number is growing. We will also launch GeoExchange where you can upload and download places, sharing local gems with each other. For example, if you are ever in Heber, Utah do you know where to get the most amazing milkshake? You can find out at GeoExchange.

We are sorry for the delay. Please understand that we are equally anxious to ship this thing. But, we are not anxious to ship something that does not meet our standards or yours. We are almost there, in just a few short days you will be able to experience the Power of Place!

THANKS FOR THE UPDATE!!

I can't say how much I appreciate a company that takes time to post a response like that (especially on a non-company owned message board)!!!!!!!!!

It's really nice to know what's going on..

BTW - The few folks at GeoDiscovery I have talked to on the phone have been nothing but the BEST..! Please thank them for me...

THANKS AGAIN!

-Eric

Question Dan @ GeoDiscovery was heard to say ...

"..We will also post GeoView Mobile 1.0 to the web early next week. This is a free download, you will also be able to download free detailed city maps of over 110 US cities, .."

and then he followed up with

"..We aim to do right.."

so catching Dan on the spot ... what product maps are available or will be available in the very near future' for that segment of North America above the 4th parallel ?
And no ... displaying white blobs and asserting they are detailed maps of our snow covered Canadian roads just won't cut it ! ;-)

Lightbulb Oops

please add about 45 more parallels to my preceding question to Dan (the 9 got lost - no map rumoured to be the cause )
:-)

No such luck...

I called GeoDiscovery today to find out the status of my order and was told that they were not shipping the Geode yet. But that they expected to ship in February. Argh!

Talking Got it!

Mine showed up today - I'd asked for express shipping hoping to get it before a trip I took last weekend. That didn't happen, but I'm still happy to have it.

I'm at work, so I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, unfortunately.

Lightbulb Geodiscovery web page

No problems with the Customer support page here. I do get a "The Free Maps page is being updated please check back later. Thank You" for the maps page. If you are using Netscape, try using IE (if you can) to view the pages. I know they have been having problems with Netscape viewing their pages correctly, which is probably why the map page is offline. They have been working on trying to get the problem fixed.

Web Site

There was a problem with Netscape and the detailed map download page which has been resolve. Additionally we now have free detailed freeway and highway maps by state. Enjoy!

Cool Got mine - First Impressions

I finally got a chance to play with my just-arrived Geode, and I thought I'd share some quick first impressions.

Quick caveat - I did not get to play with it as much as I would have liked - little things like work interfered, plus I work in downtown Seattle, so there aren't too many places with good sightlines. Also, I've never owned or used a GPS, so my basis of comparison is kind of scanty.

That said, I'm very impressed. I did get a chance during the day to try it out in one of the few fairly open places downtown, and it seemed to be "dead on" in terms of accuracy.

Even more impressive, I played with it a bit on my way home from work. No, I wasn't driving - I carpool, so I let my carpool partner drive while I played. I was amazed at how accurate the speed measurement was. According to the vehicle's spedometer, we were doing 115kph, and the Geode had us at 114kph - an almost nonexistent margin of error. Hell, for all I know the spedometer was wrong and the Geode was right.

It seems to lock up on the satellites very quickly - a minute or two - but I've never owned a GPS before, so that's based on reading things about the HandyGPS.

All in all, I'm pretty pleased. Now if they will just come out with some type of car mount, and a workthrough water-proof case, I'll be in heaven. Good job guys.
