If this is happening for something as minor as the m100, I can't wait to see what happens then the Platinum and the Prism come out in October! Not to mention the VisorPhone being released then!

(And Handspring stock goes... Up! Up! And awaaaay! )

Lightbulb

I can see that Handspring's marketshare would decine in August. Look at our threads for August... A large portion of our posts had to do with springboard shipping issues, and dissatisfaction. Coupled with this, Handspring didn't have many announcements for August.

However, September has been a banner month for SB announcements and releases. Just look at the stock price this month. It isn't going up the way it has (IMHO, it's waaayy overvalued, but I'm not complaining) because the product is resting on it's laurels.

September figures will show a totally different picture, continuing into the holiday season....

Go HAND!

The m100 price point is the issue

The reason for the decline is the m100. The m100 has meant that many retail stores are not carrying the lowest end Visor. Many people would come in looking for the Visor and end up buying the Visor Deluxe. I don't know if the Visor Prism and Platinum will make a huge difference in market share but they should make one in profits. I imagine that the Platinum will be a more profitable device than the Deluxe.

The m100 is the first mainstream Palm device to be adopted by teenagers. Teenagers are a culture that will take to beaming much more than adults.

If cheap Springboards come out that add functionality to the device I'm sure the device will do well. However, this month has seen the development of some very expensive (but useful) springboards.

Rather than come up with neat gadgets for my generation (Visor Phone) Handspring should be working with AOL to come out with portable-wireless AOL IM springboard. That's a killer ap that will drive sales of the cheap Visors.

Unfortunately, any 2-way wireless springboard would probably be too expensive at this stage to sell cheap Visors. But the VP can do SMS (text messaging with cell phones) and access the web, which should allow existing IMs to work. I believe AOL has a partnership with Reseach in Motion (RIM, makers of the Blackberry) to create an AOL IM device.
