Question

I just purchased the Hagiwara for my VPR and was wondering what everyone used to backup their system to the card. What I want to do is have games and ebooks and some programs run from the 16mg card. I also want to have the ability to restore my system from the card in the event I am away from my PC and cannot hotsync.

I tried the Jackback demo, but I experienced a few crashes. The file move just appears to move the files. I thought I read about an actual back up program to the flash card.

Any place to find a list of programs that are incompatible or will not run from Flash. I tried my main program, Action Names and was receiving errors so I moved it back to the Prism main Ram.

I have almost all my programs on the Flash.
I use JackBack to backup my Prism to the Flash.
What I like about the JackBack is you can set it up to do an auto backup of your files. (Mine is set for 2:00 AM everyday.)

What version of JackBack are you using? I tried an older version that I had on my harddrive and in the usenet someone from Jackback said that it did not work with the version I had.

I'm using 1.01.

I'll be trying 1.5 as soon as I get the upgrade.

I've heard of crash issues with 1.5. I'm planning to get Backup Buddy before I use version 1.5 because of my crash concerns.

JackBack 1.5, on my 16MB Prism with 16MB Flash module, has been working fine for me. I had an unexpected hard reset yesterday (while hotsynching) and was able to restore successfully from a JackBack backup made two hours earlier! So now I know the restore works too...

Question Just did a JackBack up to my 16mg card

I received a message when I first intsalled syszlib to my 16mg card that it could only be copied? Is this the same for everyone else?

How do you activate the restore after a hard reset? Does the Prism recognize that there is no data (like backup buddy?)? Or do you just have all the data out on the card, access jackback and hit restore?

Yes I am crazy, but I plan on doing a test run and hard resetting just to walk through the procedure so that I know what to expect when it occurs and my PC is no where in sight.

Thanks

Lightbulb Hold on!!

Wait let me get this right, you brought the Hagiwara 16mb flash module and want to use the module as a back-up card to you Prism?

If so, you don't need the Jack-Back software.

The Hagiwara module already has the back-up capability with the FileMover program. Just go to FilMover, pull down the menu and use select-all, next tap the "copy" button and your entire internal memory will be copied to the module.

If you lost all you data via hard-reset, insert the card and do the steps in reverse.

Hope this helps.

16mg card bought for 2 purposes

I bought the card for a dual purpose. I wanted to have a backup of my data in the event of a data loss away from my pc. Secondly, so that I have more memory to load anything and everything I wanted.

I saw the copy method, but then this would leave programs in two places as well as databases in two places. So I felt a backup solution was more appropriate. This would sort of create a backup file (if that is how it works) on my 16mg card as well as allowing me to load programs on the card which run from there.

For example, I have some programs loaded on the 16mg card but I kept the databases on the Prism so that I can continue to write and modify them. Without a backup of those files, I would have the program available on the 16mg card but no data files.

I tried JackBack and it seemed to back up all my data (module memory used up about 5mg doing that).

Is my analysis flawed? Or will this work? (In the event of a hard reset, insert card, run JackBack and it restores to the Prism what was last backed up and the programs on the card will continue to be there.

Does anyone know if it's possible to replace the FileMover application on a Hagiwara 16MB Flash Module with the Backup application that's on the Handspring Backup Module? This would effectively create a module that can do backups and restores of 16MB Prisms and Platinums with the tap of one button. No need for a PC connection. Or, does anyone know of a company toying with the idea of a 16MB Backup Module?

I'd rather have the one tap backup interface of a dedicated backup module than the file by file copy/restore of the FileMover app. Besides, if I compare times it takes to make the backup, the 8MB Handspring Backup Module is MUCH faster at making a perfect duplicate copy of my Prism's internal memory than the 8MB Handspring Flash Module is at copying every file (if I'm indeed getting every file; who knows if there are hiden files that aren't getting copied in a FileMover "select all"). Who wants to use a program like Filez (awesome app BTW), to take off the hidden attribute of every file before copying to a flash module with FileMover? Not me.

Scottster, I know you're really keen on this potential solution as you made a couple of posts about it but I have found the JackBack & Hagiware 16MB Flash module combination more than adequate. I have JackBack set to do incremental (compressed) backups of my 16MB Prism at 10:00am daily. It was really easy to do a COMPLETE restore after a hard reset from this backup. Also, it has the advantage that you can restore any individual files if you want to.

JackBack to 16mg

Does JackBack backup the hidden and system files too? So that when you do a restore after a hard reset, Your system is back to the way it was at the last back up (similiar to the way backupbuddy does?

Kalihari, you have been lucky so far. I prefer not to rely on luck though. The following is just one example of the many that I've read and heard about using a 16MB module and a FileMover/JackBack type of backup solution.

...The BAD NEWS is that after carefully doing image memory backups to both a 64 MB CF card and to the 16 MB Hagiwara module with JackBack, I had my first crash and hard reset today and tried to restore from the Hagiwara, and it didn't work. Oh, it restored all the files (except 4 - two minor DBs, MathLib, which I restored from BackupBuddy, and another one), but my Saved Preferences were gone! Which meant all my categories, all my hack preferences, and most of my passwords!...
Now I'm sure that JackBack is a fine product though I've personally never used it. However, I require a 100% reliable backup solution when I'm away from my PC and can't search my hard drive for any files that WEREN'T backed up or restored properly. To date, I have NEVER read or heard of a single problem restoring a backup that was performed with the Handspring Backup Module. I have personally used it MANY times and it has never failed me. All I'm looking for is the same reliability and ease of use in a 16MB version as I currently have (but can no longer use) in an 8MB version. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you have to have JackBack on the module? I'd imagine that if you had JackBack only in main memory and needed to perform a hard reset, you'd lose JackBack and any chance of restoring backups made with it.

Not to be rude, but my question wasn't whether I would find JackBack adequate or not, instead I wanted to know if it was POSSIBLE to use Handspring's Backup application that is currently found on their Backup Module on a 16MB Flash Module (currently only manufactured by Hagiwara). I'd also settle on using the Backup application on a 16MB SmartMedia card with MemPlug (I hear the PiBackup app on the MemPlug Module is unreliable) or a 16MB CF card with any of the available CF to Springboard adapters that are now on the market.

This whole website is devoted to Handspring enthusiasts and novices, some of which are pretty knowledgable in many aspects of Visor products. I'm sure SOMEONE knows the answer. I posted it numerous times across different forums to expose it to those who may follow only certain forums. Hopefully this increases my chance of coming across the person who actually has an answer.

I just read a similar post and they said that Handsprings Backup program CANNOT be used with the 16mg Hawigara.

Arrow quick question...:)

I am looking to get a flash module, but i don't know how they work. To my understanding, they work just like them MatchBook Drives...where the files are on the CF, and when i needed the files, i'd move them back and fourth with the filemover software.

Is that the same case with the Handspring and the > 16mg Hagiwara flash modules as well? or do they act seemlessly together with the internal ram?

thanks

The flash modules work differently. You can run most applications off them. You can READ databases off them. You can store docs and photos on them and have full access right off the module. The limitation is that you can't write to them. You must transfer everything via FileMover which is in ROM on the module. So, for instance, you can play a game directly off the module as long as nothing is written to any files on the module. If there is a database that writes preferences or high scores for example, the database must reside in main memory while the game runs off the module.

Right now, those looking for an easy 1 step backup of their 16mb visors should probably get a MemPlug with a 16mb card.

Oh, so they DO work differently. You can actually read off them. So i can basically have my photo album on it and the program which is in the visor's rom would be able to read off of the card? but not write right?

What about backing up? Can i still use JackBack on it like i do with the matchbook drive?

thanks Scottster

I have my album to go and the pictures loaded on my 16mg card and it runs fine. I do not have to leave the program on my VPR. With games, I basically load the game to the 16mg card but leave the DB files on my VPR so that if I write a high score it will not crash. Now that I think about it, I have most of my programs running from the card with the db's on my VPR. I do a JACKBACK to the card so that my data is backed up and then I use backupbuddy on my pc for another backup.

I have been experiencing some minor memory crashes, but I think they are HACK related as they do not occur with HACK's off. I have all Hacks on the VPR and none in the 16mg card. I am slowly going thru a testing of each HACK. My guess is that the Find HACK for Action Names is the culprit as is Afterburner (I am unsuccessful with Afterburner and would luv the extra speed of loading Action Names).
