Question

Can the G4 tower accommodate a second CD drive? For example, if you buy a G4 that comes with only a CD-RW drive, can you later add a DVD-ROM in the second bay (if that is indeed a second bay)?

Thanks.

It is a second drive bay, and you can pretty much add any standard ATAPI drive, whether it be another CD-Rom, a DVD-R or ROM, or a Zip drive.

Apple's finally switched to the 250MB Zip drives as an optional feature (not standard). Last year at this time you could get a 100MB drive standard on two of the three models, and as an expensive option on the third (the "slowest" one).
I bought an internal 250-Zip drive separately and installed it myself for half the cost.

Cool

Thanks for the FYI, Yorick. The G4 seems like a great overall system. Guess I'll just keep sitting on my hands until MacWorld, next month. That's going to be a long wait for me!

I almost took the preliminary plunge today when my buddy at Circuit City nearly succeeded in selling me the 15" Apple Studio display. They were sold out, but he kept saying..."If you order it right now, I can get it to you in less than two weeks from our warehouse". I just stood there like a deer caught in the headlights of a car. But if I purchased a new G4 now, I know I would live to regret it when considering that new systems are on the way.

Hate to tell ya, foo, but there's always "new systems on the way."

Normally I would agree with you. But considering that MacWorld is just a few weeks away, it would be stupid to buy a Mac right now.

Sigh....so close..yet so far!

I don't know about stupid but if you pick out a machine now, prices will definitely drop in a couple weeks after Apple announces whatever they're doing for the next 6 months.

Yep! Eventually I buckled under the strain of withdrawal, so I bought a Palm M505. At the time, I had been without a PDA for over 7 weeks. As soon I got the Palm, my senses slowly came back to me and I started noticing things I hadn't before. Things like; birds, flowers, blue skies, stop signs. That last one came in pretty handy.

That's what I mean. If I buy something now, I'll definitely be kicking myself in the ass on July 17.

I'm surprised you committed yourself to the m505. The color edge is on the way.

I haven't checked the site in a few days, sorry for not posting this earlier, but no you can't use the second drive bay for any type of CD/CD-RW/DVD drive. It isn't large enough. You can use a zip drive, but that is about it.

Unless the 2001 G4's changed this, but I've been keeping up on my Xlr8yourMac news and don't remember seeing anything about the second drive bay being extended.

I had thought the bays (and their corresponding faces) were the same size. After reading this I leaned over to look at my G4 (it sits on the floor) and I see that yes, the CD panel is higher. My bad. Sorry foo.
