Yee-haw!

I was in the market for a cell phone for a long time but I could never decide if i wanted to pay over $50 for a decent phone that could handle web content and had all the nifty features i wanted. Well when Handspring dropped the price on the phone module my decision had been made for me. I get voicestream (my 2nd choice after wanting sprint)600 anytime 2,000 night and weekend for $39.95.
I can browse the web and email and all that and make calls and only carry 1 device. This is the first module i have ever bought and i couldn't be happier.

Oh, and to all the people complaining about the price drop: If you didn't think it was worth what you paid, why did you ever pay it? I waited because I never thought it was worth the original prices.

Got Mine!

I placed my order Monday and figured that with the huge price drop I could put out for fast delivery. It came and hour ago. It started working twenty minutes after calling to activate it! I think I might want to bump up to the 600 min Voice Stream plan. Seventy five minutes is not going to go to far. Extra minutes at fourty cents each and I will spend the same amount after 125 minutes and still not have the 1000 weekend minutes. The VoiceStream Get More plan seems a good deal. But I'll wait a while and see what my useage realy is. If I should want to do any web browsing the 600 regular / 1000 weekend min plan would be a must. I'm glad I called and found out that changing plans is easy, before buying.

Some Voicestream Questions

I never believed the VisorPhone was worth $300 or even $250, so I wrote Handspring and told them just that. Actually, I was willing to shell out the max of $150, but I am even happier with the $49 price! My only sticking point now is Voicestream. Does anyone here live in New England and use VoiceStream with the VisorPhone or even a regular phone? I used to have Cingular and they really suck in their coverage. I even sold SprintPCS phones for while, and their coverage was decent. Verizon has the best coverage in the NorthEast I believe. But the VisorPhone only has one damn option in Rhode Island, which is Voicestream and I am not a fan of their plans. Why can't their weekend minutes be used during off-peak hours during the weekday. So anyone have an opinion on Voicestream?

Oh, and I heard that the $29.99 a month option from VoiceStream for 1500 data minutes is NOT required to dialup your own ISP with the VisorPhone. Anyone able to shed additional light on this matter?

I set up Blazer and dialed up my ISP without a hitch. No VoiceStream 1500 data minutes. But the net will burn through your normal minutes in a hurry. Extra minutes cost fourty cents each. The math is in favor of at least the premium service.
I have also used Bug Me and it looks like a cool way to send quick notes. That is when you don't want to get stuck in a conversation.

Congrats all you other Visorphone takers. I got mine a couple of hours ago, charged it and was calling away no problems... until I went to set up my ISP info. I can't get it to place call to my ISP as a modem call. What's the configuration you guys and gals are using?

I've tried using the standard modem with all the settings that work for using my cables4pdas rs232 connector to my cellphone (which works), but no go on the visorphone. I'm using Voicestream, as I previously mentioned. I do not have datastream on my plan.. I was able to not have that activated, saving the $29.99/mo. I'm using Standard Modem as the connection method, but the user's guide (yup, I did RTFM ), doesn't even show the connection type in the "Setting up VisorPhone as a wireless modem" diagrams.

I get a message "Error: no carrier (0x1102)". I'm attempting to dial my Verizon's dialup numbers. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

No Carrier means that the other end didn't pick up and start chatting with your modem. Did you try the number with your desktop's modem? Or did you try just calling the number with a regular phone?

Hi Vertigo, I tried accessing via a modem connection on my PC and it works. If I try using the connection on my visor, the Visor doesn't even attempt to dial (or doesn't look/sound like it's dialing). I just tried reinstalling the software/network configuration stuff and I locked up on the post-hotsync "Cleaning up the database" screen. It hung there for 15 minutes before I finally soft reset it to get past the screen. Now, I cant even get into Pref>Network without getting a message that "The Network Library is not available". I'll bet it had to do with having hackmaster/afterburner activated during the install. I should know better.

Looks like a hard reset/restore time.

CRUD! First time I need to use my PiBackup and I'm getting a fatal alert when the restore completes. It was a 1 day old backup too! Bummer. Guess it's not my day. Going to bed (yawn)

Great price!!! Congrats to those who can take advantage of this deal, and my condolences to those who were cut by the bleeding edge of technology. But at least you guys can use the thing, I seem to live in a Star Trekkian dampening field, my house has no carrier for all cells but Sprint. Just for yuks my friend monitored his Voicestream connection while we drove around my house, darned if I don't live in a mile wide No Carrier bubble. My other friend who has a ATT(is that it? Or was it GTE?) cellphone also get the No Carrier in my house as well. Oh well, maybe I'll just wait for the New Improved $49 Sprint Visorphone which will probably come out soon (Hey, I can dream, can't I?). Anyway, till next write .

GSM Now or CDMA Later?

OK. I'm chomping @ the bit and I am ready to get the Visorphone by the end of the weekend. However, I need one last round of advice from my colleagues here. Is it worth waiting for the CDMA Visorphone which is rumored to be released in the Fall? Will the CDMA phone be similar in price? Is it correct to assume the Service Providers for that phone would be Verizon Wireless and SprintPCS? Is it worth it to wait? Thanks in advance!
