I haven't named mine, now I am trying to think of something good.....not just a girls name.....

BTW - for all of you that think your PDA or your PC is like girlfriend (or boyfriend), you might be interested in these devices for your PC. http://www.fufme.com Please note it is adult oriented, but not pornographic.

Toby,

The "guy thing" reference is to the fact that most guys name everything...It's kind of a "territory" thing I guess

To me it's just a device, that I depend on to keep my life in working order. It is a very "personal" piece of electronics. I keep my kids medical numbers, doctor's phone numbers, even birthdays and anniversarys...

So I can see why people would name them...But some of you guys need to get out more...

On PDAs named Daryl:

No offense taken, I would be deeply honored.

On computers as boy/girlfriends:
Even back when I did name my PCs, I tried to make it clear to them that I really liked them as a friend, but nothing deeper.

On it being a guy thing:
I used to know a woman who named her cars - pretty darned close.

Ok, Ok, Ok, I admit it. I name my hardware after Shakespeare characters.

(yeah, well, you shutup!)

I've got Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (if you ping, you get "rosencrantz is alive" - get it?), Ophelia is my laptop, and the Visor is Hero. I even have "Hero is owned by:" on the Owner page under Prefs, followed by my contact info and a quote from the play...

*sigh* yeah, I'm a guy... any panty-waist comments will be cat'ed to /dev/null

out of curiosity, why those characters? why not some of the trustier (or untrustier) servants in shakespeare -- you know, eros, or puck, or oswald, speed, launce, balthazar, robin, dromio (a or s), gobbo, malvolio is a particularly good one... ariel is maybe even better.

the list goes on and on - and we haven't even touched on the fools

now i'm giving myself ideas...

I'm a UNIX guy, and on old Sun machines, when you "ping" a box, it said "<box> is alive". In all the old Sun docs the hostname was "elvis" - so "Elvis is alive". I liked the joke of having Rosencrantz and Guildenstern be alive instead of dead...

My PowerBook is "The Death Star", and has a Death Star icon on it's harddrive (Mac).
My Visor's username is just my first name (for shareware reasons), but I like to call it "Dust Puppy", because I got a startup screen hack that has the little guy from the [url=http://www.userfriendly.org)User Friendly[/url] comic strip.

Remember, Dust Puppy wrote Erwin, the AI program. Once Erwin's computer got "infected" by Windows NT, and Erwin had to migrate to other platforms.

One of them was this:

Don't all computers have names?

I'm currently working on a seven deadly sins theme with devzero.org (which I own)... I have envy, sloth, lust, pride, and my Visor is Avarice.

Naming computers is very much not a "guy" think. How else will you refer to which machine you're about to do some work on?

"Hey, I'm going to upgrade the web server software on the machine we have on the IP address foo.bar.baz.quux"? Nah.

"Hey, I'm going to upgrade the web server software on gluttony."

I named my PC at work "Caliban." Unfortunately, I don't think my boss gets it. :-(

Cool

I've named mine Joshua

(monotone computer voice) "Shall we play a game?"

He plays chess, tic tac toe, and global thermonuclear war.

Mine is named "Trumpy".

This will only ring a bell with anyone who has seen "The Pod People" episode of MST3K.
