Question Visor Deluxe broke; how should I replace it?

I cleverly dropped my beloved green Visor Deluxe. HS will send me a replacement for $85. OrI could spend some extra and get a new toy -- the Platinum or the Edge. (I'm don't feel a need for color, so I'm not going to spring for that one.)

What would you do? $85 now and see what the new year brings? $115 more for the new OS? (Do I really care about 3.5 vs. 3.1?) The Edge because it would fit nicely into my purse and I don't really use the expansion slot?

All comments appreciated.

Lori

I'd say upgrade. To an edge. I wouldn't have bought one if I didn't think it was a good device, and I wouldn't continue praising it were it to have proven otherwise. I doubt I'll ever go back to a plastic pda.

If color and the Springboard slot are not important to you, I would probably agree with Josh. I'm holding out to replace my VDX with a color device.

The Springboard is important to me (esp. since I've got the Memplug) so I went with the Platinum. If you do not need the Springboard or the color, get the Edge or you might also look at one of the Palm units.

So, no one thinks the Platinum is worth it? Or would spend the $85 and hold out for whatever other new goodies Visor is planning for the coming months?

Well, if it's a plat v. vdx, then get the plat. i think they are way down in price now...but my vdx is overclocked with afterburner and is pretty darn fast for me...plus, i think the silver plastic case looks cheap-ish.

I think the Palt is worth it. I would not go with a VDX because of the OS issue. In order touse PiDirect, you have to have OS 3.5. I spent the extra money and am happy I did.

The speed is also great, without having to overclock.

Lori, I went through the same balancing act myself a week ago and I say take the VDX for $85 and hold on to your money for a little while longer.

You called the now dearly departed unit your "beloved" green VDX. If that's how you think about it, it was meeting all your needs nicely. Maybe you've wondered ,from time to time, whether a new OS or grey scale screen or smaller form factor would change things for you, or do what your beloved green VDX was doing but do it better. Okay, fair enough, we all wonder about those kinds of things. But if so, imagine if you spend $115 more now, how you're going to feel in [fill in your own number less than 6] months when the new ones come out. The same questions, wondering and wanderlust will come back again. Whereas, if you stick with a unit which was fine until it dropped, you'll have the extra $115 for the newest model.

If it was between spending $169 for a Deluxe or $199 for a Platinum, I would say go ahead and spend the extra $30 for the faster device with a later OS. I feel that it is more than worth $30. But we are talking $85 for a Deluxe. Now the $100 extra to go from the Platinum to the Edge: I do not feel the smaller form factor is worth it to me, but I can see how it might for someone else.

Another possibility to consider: Spend the $85 for the Deluxe. Then in one to six months, if you feel you need/want a different device, then buy it and sell your Deluxe. Currently used Deluxe's are going for between $100 and $175 on eBay. So you probably could recover your $85, and possibly a little more.

My question is: why does the price of a visor keep going down, but the replacement cost stays the same?

Introducing Handspring(TM) PDA Breaker(TM). THis revolutionary device will increase your profits by up to 20%!!! It works very simple. Postition the device in the PDA where it can hit the screen. Set the wait timer for 1 year (this can be changed by the retailer to add extra time for their warranties) and then after the time limit is up the next time the customer drops his PDA the small hammer will use its pointed edge to hit and crack the screen making it unuseable and forcing him to pay you to replace the screen. This will sometimes cause the person to just go and buy a new model instead of paying the high price of replacing the screen. We also sell models for TVs, computer moniters, and about anything else that can be broken by getting hit by a small hammer in a certain spot.

(Note: The previous was a joke playing on the fact that everything seems to break right after the warranty is up)

Question

Good luck deciding what to do. So many options, but only one decision. Be sure to check out the Handera. I like what they did, but I am waiting a while longer to see what the market will bare before I make a move.

I would suspect this is the actual manufacturing cost -- before sales expense and managagerial expense--

Dude i say do the EDGE it feels like its not even there in your pocket! i just went from the Deluxe to the EDGE this past saturday. cause i had to replace the Deluxe many times. and the os 3.5 and the screen is soooooo much clearer. it aslo looks so cool and small.
one bad thing i found is that there are hardly any third paty hardware for it. and i wanted to get the visorphone but it will add double the size with the springboard sled, it looks deformed with it.

butt i say go with the edge
cause ya know the new visors wil be really expensive..probably over priced to make up for handsprings bad sales of the edge and visorphone.
well thats my opinion and bite me if ya dont like it!
