From the above-mentioned article:

At todays session, Handspring announced that the people at Airprime would be showing off their cellular phone module for the Visor. The SB100 will work on the CDMA system. Prices and availability should be announced tomorrow.

Cool! For once Handspring's delay in taking orders (for the VisorPhone) may be of benefit! It seems like at least some people want a CDMA phone more than they want a GSM phone. Maybe we'll end up having a choice.

Pictures! We want pictures!

Wink

Doh!

This is the module I've been waiting for! Too bad I just bought a Motorola Timeport for $299 from Sprint, so I can surf on my visor. Maybe I can swap phones with my wife, and then upgrade. Hopefully, since it is CDMA, I can just use my existing plan with the new module... Hmmm

Talking

This is the one! If they can just keep it under $300 and ship before the new year...

According to VC's "Live from PCIA GlobalXChange Update #4" article, "The unit looks identical to Handpspring's VisorPhone and uses the same software."

Question

I am just thinking out loud here, and have no technical knowledge to be able to say if this could or couldn't be done, but would it be possible, with the proper RS232 or USB cable, to use the VisorPhone/Airprime module as a modem for a laptop, a la the current functionality for the Sprint Interent Connectivity Kit available for their web-enabled phones?

Seems like it could just be a software update. Any thoughts?

From the article Gameboy70 referenced:

quote:
AirPrime announced a CDMA based VisorPhone - AirPrime SB1000. The unit looks identical to Handpspring's VisorPhone and uses the same software. They will not sell the unit directly to customers, only through cell phone providers. No annoucement yet which providers, but Sprint PCS and Verizon are likely candidates.

Woohoo! Maybe I can keep my current carrier, Verizon!

I know that I said that I would not buy the 299 GSM phone, but if this were under 250 and could work on Verizon I might eat my words.

It's a good excuse to replace my phone whixh needs to be repaired.

I read the press release but I still can't tell...will the Airphone module function as a wireless modem for the Visor? In other words, will you be able to surf the Web and check your regular e-mail account with it?

I'm skeptical. Why? Because if you could, they'd make a big deal of it in the press release. And because it looks like it's basically the same as the Visorphone using CDMA instead of GSM.

CORRECTION

I was mistaken about the VisorPhone, as was pointed out to me on another thread. It does provide wireless access for the Visor. So I assume the Airphone probably will, too.

There won't be any pricing information until the OEMs are annouced. For more info read the Q&A News item.
