IT's UP!!

I just checked the eyemodule site and it is back up, complete with the E2. There is also a gallery. Check it out!

I'm using the EM1 and also Handspring's nice photo Album software. It is nice how the Handspring album will show the EM pics as well. Anybody else using that? That way, you can upload pics to your visor.

This page shows that the lens is now pointed down somewhat, so that the Visor's screen can be tilted a little bit when you are taking images, instead of having to look straight down on the screen!

This is one of the best new features!

****From the eyemodule.com eyemodule2 FAQ's***
How many images can I store?
The eyemodule2 application takes less than 100K on your handheld.
A Visor Prism with 6MB free memory can hold:
Over 50 Full size VGA color images
Over 150 Palm size color images
 Over 19s of color mini-movies

A Visor Deluxe or Platinum with 6MB free memory can hold:
Over 50 Full size VGA color images
Over 660 Palm size B&W images
 Over 83s of B&W mini-movies

....
Full size images are 640x480 pixels. They are stored as JPEG files, which are supported by most image viewing software and web browsers.
Palm size images are 160x120 pixels (the same resolution as the handheld screen) and are uncompressed on the handheld but converted to JPEG format when transferred to a computer.
*****

So it seems that the 640x480 pictures take up about 120K each, I guess because they're JPEGs on the handheld itself. (6MB/50 pictures = 120K)

I have the EM 1, and I must confess to being tempted to go out and purchase its successor. However, I've got the same problem mentioned by several other folks - not a lot of free memory. On average, I've usually only got 2 mb free - it varies a bit depending on how many docs I'm carrying around. I only have that much because I have 2 mb loaded up into my Innopak 2V.

I'm surprised they didn't include some type of additional storage option, be it Flash memory or maybe something removable. They must have decided form factor was paramount, or perhaps there was a battery consumption issue.

Smile One use for the CF modules

I guess the Matchbook or Innopocket CF modules will be perfect here. You can take pictures with the EM2 then transfer the photos to the CF card.

Didn't I read from the interview with Innogear that their innodrive MS module would allow direct access to images stored in memory stick? That would be great. Despite all the bashing Innogear is taking, I believe that they will delivery the Innodrive modules. Will I can hope...

Post Eyemodule2 limitations

I just noticed a couple of things from the comparison chart on the eyemodule web site. The first is that there is no zoom view on the handheld for eyemod2, and the second is that the higher resolution of eyemod2 is only for color photos; in fact, if you want to take B&W photos (e.g. to save precious memory on your visor), the eyemod1 gives you the greatest resolution! (320x240 vs. 640x480) Seems a bit strange that you can't take higher resolution B&W photos, doesn't it?

movies?

Is anyone else having problems viewing the movies from the gallery? Is there a program I need to download in order to view them?

Hmm.. If they're stored as JPGs, then they might just be saved as individual files. That would be great...

Big deal. It only applies if you bought an EM1 in Feb 2001. Unless you were living under a rock, by Feb 1 you had seen rumors about the EM2 and wouldn't have buoght an EM1 anyway!

Thanks for the link, though.

Either they don't work for me or I'm too impatient, and I have a decent pipe.

I *think* all you need is the QuickTime plugin from Apple. I have version 2.0.1, and it works fine, even behind a firewall.

Eyemodule 1 vs. Eyemodule 2

Interesting note on the Eyemodule 1 / Rebate deal. If you purchase your Eyemodule through Staples Online, you can add a $30 discount on a $150 purchase (see http://www.techbargains.com), bringing the price to $120. Then you can rebate an additional $50 bringing the price of the EM1 to $70! When you compare EM1 @ $70 vs. EM2 @ $200, the prices seem reasonable.

For me personally, the EM1 just never had the resolution I wanted. However, I think that the EM2 has something going for it. I really like the quality of the pictures that they have in the gallery, and it seems like it could be a very useful module. I might buy this one ;-)

Just one additional note: I just checked and Staples has $40 off a $200 purchase. This brings the price of the eyemodule 2 down to $160, which is a great deal. They don't have them in stock yet, but they sell the EM1 and presumably will have the EM2 shortly. For the $40 off use Order Code: 91216; it Expires: Mar 15.

Anywhere else selling the EM 2

If anyone hears of retailers selling the EM 2 please post them here. I'm interested but would like to use amazon or other rebate programs. WOW, 8 meg of internal visor memory is starting to look really puney now, with the eyemodule 2. The VGA pictures and video will eat your spare memory in a hurry. ....hold that pose while I offload some programs and files into my CF module !
