VP is it GPRS???

Is the VP also GPRS?? GSM works great on the Cingular SE. So is the VP ready for GPRS? Cingular has an " WIRELESS INTERNERT EXSPRESS" that seems to be the GPRS system. Does anybody know.

has some hopeful news on this topic.

The VisorPhone does not currently support GPRS and I don't think anyone knows if it's even upgradeable via a flash update.

The Treo will be upgradeable to GPRS.

GPRS is in my area.To bad the VP can't be upated. I see that HS is to offer an upgrade to the TREO for VP folks. Hope it's a good deal. The faster data speeds and always on is the key.

That's a little moronic, since the Treo doesn't have Springboard. HS made some statement in a PR or something saying that the Treo would be the communicator of choice for the average user, but the Visor + VisorPhone would be the choice of those needing the expandability of the Springboard slot. That would suggest the release of an upgraded, slimmer VisorPhone at some point in the future, but that's all it does -- suggest.

I would love to upgrade my Prism to a color Treo, but not without Springboard.

I disagree. I bet plenty of VP users wish there was a small PalmOS device that was both PDA and PDA. I have several Springboards myself, but I rarely use them because I almost always have my VP plugged in instead.

VP upgrade!

I'm sure the VP is upgradeable and I know this because I had some problems with sms library (I'm programming some custom sms applications with it) and handspring sent me a patch which basically updated the applications on the VP. Now I'm running Phone v.1.0.1 and SMS Application 1.0.1 which contains some fixes.

I don't know if they will make the changes for GPRS or if the hardware is capable to handle gprs (It forces you to buy the new one).

By the way, I'm creating some applications for sms and I planning to develop a free little application to retrieve e-mail every X amount of time.

You are our hero pic_micro! We need more development for the VisorPhone!

Great stuff! Shame the VP is so big. I sold mine a week ago and moved into Bluetooth with the Red-M Blade Springboard, and an Ericsson T39. With a USB Bluetooth on my desktop I can use the Prism on the go (GPRS via T39) or at home (PPP over MochaPPP via Bluetooth Serial Profile).

BTW, the VP is not GPRS, as already noted... And it's only 9.6k, even if the documentation says otherwise - I've got an e-mail from Handspring to confirm this

Handspring tech and cust service both told me that the VP is NOT going to be GPRS. My VP sings along much faster than the stated 9kbps

GPRS vor the Treo will be better but not by much. TREO GPRS will only get to something like 27kbps., which is still terrible. Again...Handspring releases a great product with one major flaw...then they'll release a better version and expect all the early-adopters to buy the better version (i.e. a WCDMA Treo 3G capable).

Arrow What?

Do we really need more than 27kbps on a PDA? The hardware and technology for streaming media just isn't there yet. Handspring is not forcing anyone to get the Treo. If you think that the Treo has a flaw, waot until they release one that doesn't...plain and simple.

Out of curiousity, what kind of fixes are in the patch?

Oh, and what kind of application are you working on? What are you programming using (tools and language)? Sorry, I'm just chalk full of questions today...

Of course you need the extra bandwidth on your PDA. Maybe not on the boring greyscale Treo model or other boring greyscale Visor models (like my Deluxe), but certainly on the color Treo and on the color Sony Clie models or the M505. Especially since GPRS can support speeds upwards of 384kbps, which is comparable to some DSL lines in homes. What would you do with such bandwidth? You would watch news clips of CNN, get movie trailers, watch normal web sites load up quickly with color graphics (ever try to surf regular sites with the Visorphone?). Everything is enhanced with greater bandwidth and the possibilities are endless. You must be the only one here who doesn't agree with this fact.

The fact is that 3G techology is rolling out across the U.S. as we speak and HS will be releasing what it calls an advanced PDA/Phone combo which will instantly be outdated. You can bet that Samsung will be releasing a 3G WCDMA version of its PDA/Phonecombo sooner rather than later. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony entered the frey as well with a Clie 3G PDA/Phone Combo.

Trust me... I won't buy the Treo in its current state. I'll buy it in a year when the WCDMA 3G Color version is released and the price will be half what it is now to boot! This is just the way HS operates. Ask anyone who purchased a VP 8 months ago for $299.00!!! Where's HS's loyalty there?

Hi,
a) The patch has the following changes
Software Release is v1.0.1
Fix# SMS Application Updates
2095 The correct incoming SMS message is opened when a message is received simultaneously while messages are composed.
2100 Selecting a phone number during a Find operation in the SMS application no longer results in a Fatal Alert.
2115 SMS messages composed during a data call are now successfully sent to the pending folder.
2256 SMS Lookup no longer hangs when searching for words containing letters that start the last entry in the address book.
2467 When sending SMS email messages with 200+ characters users are now warned the message may not be successfully sent.
2257 Third-party SMS now can receive SMS messages.

Fix# Data Call Handling Updates
2027 On 3.1, attempting data call while voice call in progress no longer results in a serial port lockup.
2201 Active call screen is now available after attempting to check voice mail from alert that appears while on a data call.

b) I'm mainly programming sms applications.
c) All my programs are developed using code warrior with C language.

Pic_Micro,

How did you get the patch from Handspring? Was it e-mailed to you or did you download it? I would like a copy!

Thanks for any help you can provide.
