Talking

Back in the office today.

PFC: I was using the Handspring Modem and connecting to a landline. (I was sitting in a lounge where they had phones with a data jack on the side).

MikeD: Cool! I'm really impressed with the handspring modem. Being 33.6 doesn't really make a difference to me when compared to the 56 coming out in the sixpack. Going through proxiweb is very quick and you'll only be downloading stripped down versions of websites so speed isn't the issue. However, i do agree with a post earlier that mentioned the profile of the modem. I can't put the cover on my visor and it does stick out enough that i don't keep the modem on when transporting the visor around in my pocket.
BUT! It makes a great access tool none the less. I was away all week and whenever i had the chance, i'd plug in the modem and dial in to get my email and check some stock quotes and with the RhinoPack 2000 i use, the modem fits nicely along the bottom with the visor above it!

One thing i have noticed. Browsing the web and sending and receiving email pays a hefty toll on batteries on the Visor (EVEN with the batteries in the modem!!!) My meter went from 40% to 12% in about 25 minutes of surfing the web yesterday! I even turned off the visor for about 15 minutes (as i've noticed battery voltage increases when i've done this in the past after long usage) and it only went up to about 19%!!
I'm not sure what battery usage would be like if the modem didn't have batteries of it's own!!! I'll continue monitoring typical battery usage when surfing, emailing, and updating avantgo and hopefully i'll have a better picture of what power requirements are like in the future (before the battery-less sixpack comes out!)

Hope you get your modem soon mike. The visor with modem team up has impressed me and others (including a gentleman at the airport yesterday!!).

Wow that was some pretty hefty battery drainage! I was just thinking the same thing about the 6-pack since it has NO batteries... Isn't xircom making modems and wireless products for the springboard too? I think they were called springports or something. Anyway, when I read about them, I was hoping they would combine at least two features together but each feature is separate. What I mean is that ethernet springboard is separate from modem and wireless etc... That would be gerat if there was something with a modem, ethernet, with built in wireless capabilities. Sorta like their PCMCIA modem/ethernet card!

PS: i hope I get my modem soon too! 1 week today and no shipping notice..
