Question

I have read on various posts that there seems to be some problems with some HS cradles. I too am on my second defective serial cradle. My question, however, is this. Do the problems seem only to be with the serial cradles, or are people facing the same difficulties with usb ones as well? I am using win95, and if I keep having this problem I may just return this serial cradle, buy win98 update, and use the usb cradle that came with my Visor Deluxe. Any help is appreciated!

The USB cradles themselves seem to be pretty reliable... most USB problems tend to be software related - drivers, etc. The serial cradle contains a small circuit to convert the Visor's TTL-level signals to the standard RS232-level that the PC/serial recognizes. I think it's this circuitry that goes bad.

I've been using Win98SE with USB since I got my Visor and haven't really had any trouble. For what it's worth, I personally think Win98 is far superior to Win95 on the desktop. I'm sure there are others who would disagree with me but I've had almost no problems since upgrading. Plus, I have a horde of USB devices (scanner, camera, TV tuner, Visor) that just weren't possible with 95.

I'd recommend the upgrade to Win98 and a USB cradle. You'll get the benefit of much faster sync's as well...

My USB cradle has worked flawlessly for the 3 weeks I've had the Visor Dx... I would recommend one wholeheartedly. As for Win98, I'd again agree with the previous poster, I think it is far superior to Win95.

I just bought my blue visor deluxe a few days ago. I began using the USB cradle with Win98 on my pc. It worked without a hitch. I just upgraded my system to Win2000 and had no problems as well. I love this thing!!!!!

well, you guys have me pretty much convinced, I guess. I am not the most knowlegeable person in the world when it comes to computers, but i felt pretty confident i know how to configure the com ports correctly, etc. and install a peripheral. So I was kind of hesitant to blame the problem on operator error or serial port problem. But I was not ready to rule those out all together. I think I am to the point, though, at which I have to conclude that this serial cradle (like the first one) is defective.

I guess it is on to win98 and usb for me.

Thanks for the help, folks!

Does anyone know where I can get a Serial cable in the UK ? I've had a good look, but can't find it so far. HS's site won't ship to UK. NT won't accept USB

agh.

thanks
R
