Question

Hi, I have the MatchBook Drive, and the prism(soon) and i'm wondering if there's any way that i can take pictures with my digital camera(Nikon Coolpix 800 - in *.jpg format) and then having some software convert/open it and show it in the prism??

Yes there is, but you have to do a simple conversion. There is a program called SplashPhoto http://www.splashdata.com/products/index.htm that does the best job at turning your Prism into a portable photo album. The included Desktop image editor allows you to convert a JPEG for display on your Prism. I'm using it with the CoolPix 950 and it's phenominal.

I agree with Scottster & Akur. I've seen good things about both SplashPhoto & Album to Go. I'm using the demo of SplashPhoto right now on my new Prism and am impressed. Fast, easy to use, image quality is very good, and the handheld app itself is quite small.

Another option I haven't yet looked at is MGI PhotoSuite Moblie Edition. One other thing is price. ATG is free, SplashPhoto is $19.95, and MGI PhotoSuite is $24.95.

Hope this helps.

Talking

thanks all!!! that has been helpful...but my real question was...is there anyway that i can do the conversion in the palm? lets say i go take a vacation and wanted to show my pictures in a bigger screen than my digital camera's little preview screen. Is there any way to bypass the computer, and just do everything in the prism?

What kind of storage media does your camera use?

The only way I know of natively displaying JPGs on the Visor is to use the MemPlug module for SmartMedia. There is a built in application called PiViewer http://memplug.sjweb.net/PiViewer.htm that automatically displays any JPGs stored on the SmartMedia. It does not do a conversion. The idea is a great one, but the implementation leaves much to be desired. However, for what you're trying to do, MemPlug is useless. Our Nikons use CompactFlash and the MemPlug and it's PiViewer is for SmartMedia.

FWIW, I evaluated Albums to Go, Handspring's Photo Album, PhotoSuite, SplashPhoto, PiViewer and a few betas of different freeware apps. SplashPhoto is by far the most elegant, easy way to use the Visor as a photo album. You can save a photo in mutiple color depths and beam to others using a different PalmOS PDA. For example, I view photos on my Prism in full 16-bit color. If I save the photo to my Prism with multi device support, I can beam the photo to a Palm IIIc user and it will display beautifully in 256 colors. If I beam it to a Visor Platinum user, it'll display in 16 shade greyscale. I have no association with any of the products I tested. I just chose the one with the features I like the most, was the easiest to use and made my pictures look GREAT on the Prism's screen.

I just thought of something. I don't know if it'd work, but it's worth a try. CardAccess has a program called USB FileMover 1.1 http://www.cardaccess-inc.com/support.html that allows programs on Springboard modules to be copied to the PC.

USB FileMover
...You can copy files to/from the module's memory and can even copy hidden applications like FileMover to your desktop. UFM only works with Card Access products. Other flash memory modules can copy data to your desktop but not vice versa.

If you copy PiViewer off the MemPlug module and then install it back to the Prism's main menory via hotsync (according to James, you can only transfer one way from non-CardAccess modules), I wonder if it would function correctly with your MatchBook Drive and CompactFlash media. It's worth a try. You wouldn't be violating the license agreement for PiViewer since you'll have purchased the MemPlug. Any ideas on this anyone?

I dont' think you could access the pictures on your compact flash card anyways. With Kopsis' FAFileMover you can only access one level of folders. I have an HP and my mom has a Kodak digital camera, both use CF and they both store their pictures in a folder like DCIM/HP315. Which is a folder inside of another and FAFileMover can't access that .. If it could, or you could find a way to access your pictures on the CF you could copy them all to your visor's memory. Then move those to your memplug and then us PiViewer to look at them and your memplug would become like a portable photo album.

But we're talking about PiViewer which CAN access nested subfolders. The website states that you take the SmartMedia out of your camera and put it in MemPlug. The photos in .jpg format are then viewable. Almost all digital cameras (including my Nikon) store their photos a few levels deep. CF and SmartMedia both use FAT12. The file structure is the same. Once PiViewer, which reads SmartMedia, is removed from the memory of the MemPlug and placed in the Prism's memory, I see no reason why it shouldn't read a CF card in a MatchBook drive the same way it accesses the SmartMedia. The Kopsis software isn't being used to view the photos.

Besides, I look at it this way... If I have my camera with me and the CF is in it, why am I using my Prism to display pictures anyway? The LCD screen on the CoolPix camera isn't too bad. It certainly isn't tiny compared to the Prism's screen (though I don't know the size of the 800; I have the 950.) I use my Prism to transfer and view pictures on so I don't need to carry around my Nikon. If I'm on vacation, I can always find a computer to allow me to do the transfer. If you want a portable solution, get a USB CF reader and have a copy of SplashPhoto on zip disk and take them on vacation with you. Of course, the more expensive option is to get a digital camera that uses SmartMedia and then buy the MemPlug with PiViewer.

Just because the file system is the same between Smartmedia and CF does not mean that the software will work for both. I think that in order to access the information the software has to address teh indiviual pins of the memory. Smartmedia and CF don't have the same pins and such so using PIViewer on your CF adapter won't work.

I think you mean the individual pins of the adaptor; but I believe you're mistaken in either case. It certainly can't hurt to try. Anyone out there who knows a definitive answer?

again, i Thank Y'all for all your help on this matter.

since we're on the memory subject, i have a different question. If i've done a hard reset on my visor, is there any way that i can restore from my compactflash card(matchbook drive)? Is there any way to install jackback or FaFileMover ON the rom? because unless i'm near a computer, the backups that i've done with jackback are useless...

Not sure about the ROM issue. Although I would like to be able to install it in the ROM if I can.

Sorry Guys. ROM stands for Read Only Memory. It is "burned" by the factory and is non-flashable. The ~2MB of on-board flash memory that Palm and some other devices use to store the OS (which is accessed with a program such as JackFlash), would survive a hard reset I believe. This would be a perfect place to store Jackback & FaFileMover; however, that's a moot point for us since not a single Handspring device has this type of memory. Best thing I can think of is to keep a copy of JackBack and FaFileMover on an 8MB Flash Memory Module and then carry that with you. If you need to restore, pop in the Flash Memory Module, copy the the two files to the Visor's main memory, pop out the module, pop in your Matchbook drive and restore away!

The Handspring Flash Memory Module http://www.palmgear.com/hs/products...;prodcatID=5,17 is about $80 and the Hagiwara 8MB Flash Module http://www.palmgear.com/hs/products...;prodcatID=5,17 is about $75. Either one is small enough to carry around if you are that worried about data loss on the road.

I too have tried 'album to go' and prefer the new SplashPhoto. So easy and a nice interface too.

Does anyone know if you can save a digicam/SM/memplug .jpg to visor and then replace memplug with modem and email that .jpg.
Just wishing to replace the laptop for offloading of pics.

I have an HP photosmart camera and it has infrared on it so I can use HP's jetsend program to receive the pictures from the camera and supposedly view them then. But it won't convert to fireviewer format for some reason. However you can tell it not to conver to fireviewer and then you have a .jpg file in your visor which I supposed with the right email client you could email it .. I've wanted to try this actually. I think i might sometime tonight.
