Angry

Stuff Grandtech (distributers for Handspring in Asia)!

Unlike the 25% of retail price to fix a broken screen like in the US the charge here is 40% of the retail price. It was already more expensive than retail here than in the US. Now to replace my 2 week old Edge's broken screen I have to pay 40% of the full retail price!!!!

As you can see.. I'm extremely angry! I've written to Handspring US already to complain about it. This kinda of thing would put a lot of people off Handspring products in Asia for sure. Grandtech supplies Handspring for all of Asia except Japan I think.

Except for the screen my Edge is in mint condition, no scratches, nothing bent, it's friggin 2 weeks old! Would you pay 40% of the price of a 2 week old product to for a new screen?

No. I'd see if I could get a replacement screen and do it myself.

Yeah, prob. best advice.
And move to where the lower rates are!
(Sorry. Wish I had better / more advice. Bet you'll never sit on another Visor again, eh? Uh, sorry, again....)

Let's see
VDX $199
screen fixed $85
Total 42.7%

Sounds about right. Yes, it does stink. Wait until they come out with the $99 Solo. That is going to be a disposable unit.

Yup.. for the Visor Deluxe.. but $100 out of $399 is much less percentage wise.

Lesson here is?

Use Protection

Of some kind for your PDA anyway.

I'm thinking of one of those padded bags by Rhino.

Talking

Handspring got back to the Malaysian distributers within a week of my complaint and immediately gave them a new price list!! I'm impressed.

Well for those who curious, the "real" prices for screen replacement for the Edge comes to about US$95. It might be cheaper in the US. Heck of a lot better than their previous price of US$170 that made me really angry with Handspring (Malaysia).

For a refurbished unit, I'm not complaining. In fact the screen seems to be a much better qualiy one to my previous Edge. The original one, the screen felt soft, slippery and prone to scratches. Not with the new one, in fact there is even some "stickyness" that makes it a lot easier to write on in the grafitti area, but a bit annoying to drag on the screen. And it seems harder (I can't see any minute scratches with use).

The cover though snaps less tightly than my old one, but it's not loose enough to just flip open.

All in all.. a very happy Handspring and Edge user!

Holy hell!!! I'm impressed, too! Nice move, HS. That's 50% of the reason I bought the edge over the m500 (that vibrating alarm would've been nice).

BTW, I'm pretty sure screen replacement is US$100 for the edge. Haven't been able to find out conclusively, though.

Post Replacemnt Screen

My wife broke the digitizer on her Visor Deluxe. I ordered a used replacement from a scrapped Palm (they just look different). I got it from www.gethightech.com for $55 + $5 S&H. Now it is only $40 for the Palm and $50 for the Visor plus $5 S&H. You can even save $5 or $10 more if you buy two.

They have detailed pictures and directions on the site and it only took me about an hour. I had small phillips head screw driver, a razor blade, double sided scotch tape, and some window cleaner.

They sent it promptly and it worked fine.

The only downside is she broke it again a month later and we don't know why. So I bought her a more rugged Edge and it has been fine. Then they bought the old Visor back for $70 to use for parts.
